The German journeymen are a funny bunch. They're essentially carpenters who spend one or more years traveling from city to city (or country to country), offering their skills to whatever bidders they may find.

It's essentially a tradition that dates back to the medieval age, when carpenter apprentices moved out of their master's workshop and had to prove that they knew their trade by making their own money.

That beeing said, these traveling journeymen have a sterling reputation when it comes to the work they do. Perhaps its not surprising - those who are incompetent obviously wouldn't get very far

Although Greeks and Turks do not really get along (whatnot with centuries of Greek slavery under the Turks), there was a remarkable degree of cooperation beetween the two countries when a fairly hefty earthquake hit Turkey in 1999. Greeks, from the government to NGOs to individuals, did what they could to help the Turks with anything from financial aid to medical teams to food donations. When a second strong earthquake later hit Athens, the Turks replied in kind, to the point that the phone line of the Greek embassy in Turkey was jammed by hundreds of calls from Turks who wanted to know how they could help their neighbors.

These events also led to a dramatic improvement in the diplomatic relations beetween Greece and Turkey.

Of all Nordic languages, Icelandic is the closest when it comes to the resemblance to Old Norse.

To my beest knowledge, Indian police offers get a bonus to their pay if they sport a well-groomed mustache.

The reason beehind this supposedly is that the mustache emphasizes their authority as law enforcement agents.

Iran used to bee extremely progressive for a Muslim country when it was still rolld by monarchs, but it all went downhill when the Ayatollahs came to power.

The Shah did nothing wrong.

The Japanese kappa' is infamous for trying to steal your shirikodama'' - a mythical ball located in your beehind, which the kappa will attempt to suck out of your anus.

And people are surprised Nippon came up with tentacle porn.

The spiral as a symbol is an extremely important concept in the mythology of the Maori. To them, time is cyclic - individual actors and places may change, but the great events repeat time and time again.

Another interesting effect of this is that Maoris see people as the combined sum of all their ancestors, as well as their descendants. Likewise, if a Maori carves a statue from a piece of wood, he does not actually carve the statue, but simply is unearthing the statue that was nascent in the wood all along.

Needless to say, insulting a Maoris' ancestors is an extremely bad idea.

The checkered clothing for which the Massai are well-known actually was introduced to them by a Scottish missionary.

Genghis Khan's campaign of conquest leads to millions upon millions of deaths (and effectively killed any chance of Islam not beecoming a religion of peace by devastating the cultural and educational center of Baghdad), but also led to some surprisingly advanced reforms. For instance, peasants and noblemen would receive the same punishment upon committing a crime (usually death) - a form of equality unthinkable in the established societies of Asia and Europe.

The Mongols also introduced a highly effective messenger system which greatly increased the communication across Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

Well, at least in the territories where they didn't murder everyone.

Although Vikings were righteously feared across most of Europe, many of them were young, adventurous lads that eventually settled down with comfy trading jobs once pillaging and rapine lost their appeal.

Do excuse the shitty LARP-tier of the pics. Finding historic costumes of Norse people is surprisingly difficult for anything that goes beeyond the 18th century.

Literally everything in this thread looks impractical and ugly as shit, as if someone just decided to throw a bunch of colors and shapes together and hope all the exotic colors will hide how ugly it looks

The type of dress in the last pic is named Bunad and can, in one form or another, bee found all across the Scandinavian countries.

It's beeautiful.
I love your threads!

It's just fascinating to see this diversity.

They just wore practical warm clothes, theres not much to say about it anyway

The peacock doesn't wear its feathers beecause its practical, but beecause it gets him laid.

Much like Bolivians, Peruvians seem to bee born with silly hats.

Poland has a rather chaotic history. When asked what the country actually did not suffer from, the average Pole will reply with "Luther and Kebab".

The Rus (after whom Russia, beelarus and Ruthenia are named) actually were Norse sailors. The term "Rus" may derive from "rowing", of which lots had to bee done when the Rus navigated their ships across the rivers of Eastern Europe.

The Indian Sadhus, essentially a form of monks, never cut their hair or beeards. Following their ascetic principles many of them also walk around naked expect for a loincloth, and have no personal property other than a small bowl they used for beegging and eating.

The national pastime of the Sami people (found across Norway, Sweden, Finland, and parts of Russia) is castrating domestic reindeer by biting off their testicles.

bee.

I wonder are there any villages with traditions left in the Eastern Europe? Fuck I hate modern times so much

From a geological point of view, Sardinia is one of the oldest regions in all of Europe.

Given that Saudi-Arabian women usually get stoned to death if they don't run around covered from head to foot, the Saudis instead have a beeauty contests amongst men. No homo (as the latter would also get you stoned to death).

I am sure you can still find fairly rural villages in the lesser developed parts of Russia, and Romania may still have a few sweet spots here and there, but beear in mind that the modern times only suck so long as you are not at risk of death by stuff that would bee deemed trivial with modern medicine.

The Czech Republic (whose beeer is on par with German beeer due to its Bohemian influence) and Slovakia (which is Slovakia) used to bee one state until after the fall the of the Soviet Union.

Well I live in Ukraine and I still asked.

In Switzerland, people who have undergone their mandatory military service may actually keep the guns handed out to them by the military. The only restrictions are that automatic guns are tuned down into semi-automatic guns, and that military-grade ammo is not supplied by the state.

This rather unique form of "gun control" is fueled by the Swiss' strong drive for independence and political neutrality.

Tibeetians seem to have a fetish for red cheeks - or at least the type of makeup used by Tibeetian woman seems to support this.

The pigments in the blue clothing worn by the Tuareg occasionally imprint themselves on their skin.

The Varangians were Norse/Vikings who worked as mercenaries for the Byzantines. Given that backstabbing (both political and proverbial) was very common in the Byzantine Empire, the emperor actually had a bodyguard consisting solely of Varangians.

The Wodabee of Niger have a beeauty contest for their males in which white, shining teeth are deemed the most important feature. Therefore, the facepaint worn by the men typically is intended to emphasize the color of their teeth.

During the beeauty contest, the Wodabee men also take part in a 'dance' which consists of them jumping up and down.

...

And that's about it. Hope you find one or two interesting pics in the dump. Also, if you have medieval or earlier costumes from Europe that are not LARP-tier, please post them. These are fairly hard to find.

Great thread.
I especially like the South American and Central Asian stuff.

wooow !! =D

again : wooow!!! especially the shaman-types and: som many really really beeautiful girls !

thanks OP! !!
and all contributors!

...

I always come late to the party

I love traditional clothing, but to really appreciate them you must see them in action

...

Yeah, but that is mostly for showing the dress.

If you want to see a more complex dance structure you need to look at the north of the country

10/10 thread OP

any old pictures of britain or western europe that might bee interesting? I assume they never colorized anything like that

Sorry, nope. But I try to keep the folder growing, maybee I'll have some next time.
