What I don't understand, is that windows users will go to all sorts of lengths to continue to feel safe on windows, like pirating anti-malware software that kills system performance or downloading all these sketchy applications off the internet to disable telemetry features, but when it comes to using anything significantly more secure than windows, it suddenly becomes too much effort.

This may be hard for people like you to understand, but Windows actually works with most hardware, Linux does not, Windows also works with programs a lot of people want to use, Linux/Wine does not

I think you missed the point of my post, but I'll bite.
This hasn't been my experience. The only hardware I have ever run into an issue with in the past year, has been with a brother printer and an older tv capture card. It seems the consensus is that win10 doesn't work with most hardware because nobody has updated drivers to be compatible yet.

Outside of businesses, it seems most casual computer users don't have an explicit need for proprietary software. The majority of people I know do not use their computers for anything but checking e-mail/facebook and watching youtube videos, or looking up porn on google/yahoo image search like a teenager born in the 90's.
I don't deny that some people are locked into the walled garden that is windows because businesses or schools depend on proprietary software, but for anyone else, paying for a walled garden that's a few walls short of keeping the bugs out is just choosing to be willfully ignorant.
To even bother with pirating windows, and pirating anti-malware applications to make up for window's security flaws, then downloading a bunch of shady software to stop microsoft's own spyware, so you can keep pirating software, why bother going through all that effort?
It's significantly less effort to just install Mint, and use free alternatives to the shit they never intended to pay for anyway.

I recently installed Q4OS onto a computer I built. I eventually came to love it but at first the only reason I installed the thing is because every other OS besides SLAX wouldn't recognize my USB WIFI adapter.

If you must install W10 on a partition, I recommend disconnecting any external drives cams mics internal drives network cable etc when doing so, and get the pro edition if you can

Use a better app removing software (eg: ccleaner) and delete anything non essential remaining

Now, take a flash drive and load and install peerblock + a malware virus solution of your choice (eg: nod32) + a sniffer if that's your thing (eg: wireshrk) to watch the fun go down

Now, make sure peerblock is uptodate & running, and get ready to start adding custom blacklists - Connect that network cable and watch the fucking insane amount of port connections M$ initiates, then start watching the addresses and wildcard range banning their servers, you'll have a good size list once you're done, you can do the same for facebook, goygle, etc

Only use if for your work needs, then go back to the better way once you're done
