It has a quadratic complexity if you take the "intuitive" size of the image as n.

But the complexity is not actually the problem. I think it's what people latch onto because so many people have at least a vague idea of what it is. Complexity is an issue if n is larger in production than it was during testing. But the captchas are all the same size, so that's not what's going on here. A quadratic complexity doesn't mean that a program is actually slow, only that it slows at a faster rate than programs with a lower complexity as the size of the task increases.

The problem is that it's using PHP's sin sequentially on every pixel. There are libraries for manipulating images that are much more efficient than doing this manually in a scripting language. I expect they have the same complexity (maybe not), but they solve the problem.

I've explained this before in of these threads.
You can't scale the number pixels linearly, because the number of pixels is already a function of the image dimensions.

Then it was a resource hog issue, and the resource hog was Hotwheels fault.

They probably would've needed something better than the hardware they hard without document caching, but that doesn't change the fact that it was hotwheels massive resource hog that was sineing every pixel of a generated image sequentially which was the cause of 10+ second response times when they started getting new IP addresses or a bunch of people started clicking around.

If Hotwheels had done his job and investigated the issue at all at any point, he'd have seen it way before January. He had to wait until MySQL actually completely crashed and refused t start to see that it was causing problems.

For one I'm too entrenched in this site to give up on it (call it Stockholm or whatever you please I'm still pretty happy with the site's userbase in general and as far as functionality goes posting works in the first place which is more than can be said before Codemonkey got involved by deploying Alacrity) and Codemonkey's too busy to help improve right now so after this week is when we'll see more testing and more improvements.

All the other chans have their own sets of problems, from nonexistent userbases to their own crippling programming faults, and I'd rather stick with the demon I'm familiar with that's going to improve down the line.
