It's really hard, yeah. The problem is kanji. Multiple readings, there are so fucking many of them… etc. So it's hard to read the language, and as a result you pretty much only make huge gains (protein powder bra) when you like to talk to people. The attitude towards foreigners is as varied as the people. (Not hugely, but, you know, some…) Young people generally love foreigners. The women love Western men and the men love Russian girls because of their child-like faces. Well, honestly, Russian girls are really attractive under 25 or so.

Old people will still glare at you occasionally, or clear their throat, but I can't blame them. You don't realize how annoying and rude most foreigners are until you live in a calm, clean place like Japan for awhile. Japan is mostly low-tech, except for the parts that are super-high-tech. It's mostly countryside, for one. Just tons of mountains that are hard to build on. But Japan is almost entirely rural, contrary to popular belief. And they respect tradition and like to be old-fashioned. So they have a lot of great new tech, but are also set in their ways.

It's a cool combo IMO. It keeps technology from becoming the new religion, like it has in the West. So yeah, there are "galapagos" phones still, mostly used by middle aged people and older, which are these really well-designed flip phones. Like, they are actually legitimately good. You can browse the web semi-comfortably on them for example. And they invented a clever input method for kanji and such.
