For a beginner, I would recommend Ghost In The Shell, Akira, any ghibli movie, or any Satoshi Kon movie. As for series, I recommend Code Geass, Gurren Lagann, and Welcome To The NHK. These are good places to start in my opinion.

It's just an unconventional mecha anime with gainax animation when they were at the top of their game. The plot is pretty weird and the atmosphere is artsy and those are perfectly fine reasons to keep away from it, make no mistake about that. I still enjoyed it for what it is and probably someone else will too, it feels like the hype is a big part of what ruined it for so many.

It deals with serious topics then tries to lighten the mood with chibi character models and dumb jokes.
It fails in the same way the Ultimate Hellsing OVAs fail a bit. Knowing it could have been better is what bothers me the most.
So, in the vein of shounen manga/anime it rates near the top, but for quality media in general, not so much.

The fact that they give little background on the main character made me relate deeper than, let's say, Naruto and all his muh childhood muh frands shit. Just what adventure may come after made me want for more. Cowboy Bebop, because I like jazz and the art style is solid. Tekkonkinkreet, a movie, offers a different style. Pretty good, too.
