I remember that thread from last summer, ended up watching The Power of Myth but never got any further. The OP seemed to know his stuff and really talked the whole thing up, is it something you would say is worth delving into? Metropolis, according to my interpretation, is an allegory to the political situation of WW1, and much more obviously The Apocalypse of John. Inspired by the Red Revolution of Russia in 1905 and 1917, and the unfair treatment on blue collar classes in the Industrial Age, Lang expressed his own vision where both socialism and capitalism lead to destruction and death of human soul. No one cared about each other, their kids, or even their own future. Earthly pleasure is the only thing they strive for.

Metropolis of course is the Babylon. It is the symbol of humanity's progress and achievement, built by the hands of the suffering proles. Maria is an allegory of the Church. She gives hope and faith to the poor, rejects violence, and is always rejected by the Babylon. She believes in peaceful protests and never tells the people to fight against their oppressors.
