Voting for NATSOC or even Far Right parties might as well be voting for Liberal, you realize how the preference system works right? if your crazy right wing party doesn't get a seat, your vote trickles down to next preference, if they don't get a seat, next preference. Until your final pref, which if they don't get in, results in a vote deal with one of the major parties.

This is why you should ALWAYS check voting deals with minor parties. You're actually safer voting for a major party at least as far as House of Reps are concerned. Senate.. by all means go crazy with the minor parties.. its good for the country and they usually have a good shot at getting in.

Also heads up that they changed senate voting so we're basically going into the new rules blind. This worries me a bit because now preferences will be thrown away and more votes will go to the major parties by default. (Turnbull wanted this though in order to get a majority senate).

Eitherway I'm a strong ALP seat, I'm obligated to vote them in House of Reps- the alternatives in my electorate are far worse, and honestly our rep is actually not that bad. The Senate however.. I'm still unsure- its the voting deals that will ultimately decide who I ultimately vote for.

If you're in a strong ALP/LNP seat, regardless who you vote for the seat holder will still win (thus making your vote null). Swing seats decide governments- every vote counts there. Strong seats, you won't even make a dent. Its why I have to vote ALP in my seat because they would win regardless.

Independent seats that are safe will always be independent, that's usually how it works. Swing seats are the only places where votes actually matter.

There is only one major exception to my rule, and that is, if the candidate is likely to die after election- it forces a new election wherein the seat becomes a swing seat. It can happen. But regardless your vote will be disregarded as you'll be replacing it with a new vote anyway.
