I'm trying to understand a quantum theory of gravity but it all seems like mathmagic and not realistic.

No. It's not really fair to say any mathematical theory of physics is bullshit unless it predicts wrong results.

Right now the problem is that experiment is lagging far behind theory (because theory is far more interesting IMO which is why I am studying it) so LQG and String theory prediction wont be tested for ages. In other words, our particle accelerators need to be hitting energies around the plank length.

Then again I know nothing about LQG except that it is based off gauging the Poincare group.

How can the radius of the universe be ~45 billion light years but the universe only be 13.8 billion years old? Does the speed of light change over the life of the universe?

This is all to do with inflation. The weird thing is that the universe is quite homogenous at large scales even though no thermal equilibrium could have been established because no heat could have flown from one point to the other (they were out of causal connection).

the future only exists as probabilities. for the brain to see the future you'd have to see all the possible outcomes and in order of likelihood. the human brain isn't designed to process that much information.

Also science has progressed greatly since GR in the way of field theory. And in fact GR can be seen as the gauge theory of the Poincare group (as I indicated earlier) so fit in very snugly with modern physics.

Endeavor to learn QM and GR and then you can honestly challenge it.

Think of electricity as a sound wave moving through a medium which is comprised of electrons.

Imagining this medium as a bunch of balls and springs, sound moves at a speed of sqrt(T/p) where T is the tension of the spring and p the density of the medium. Sound travels faster through more rigid media (ground vs air) and less dense (crust vs core of the Earth).

The difference with electrons is that the electrostatic force is long ranged. So the motion of one electron pushes them all around some amount (and is a 1/r^2 law but lets not worry). This is like having a VERY STIFF SPRING! And electrons are very light. Combined this means very fast waves.

So if you input a signal generator and pump in a wave and see how long to takes to go down a wire and come back, you will have a high fraction of the speed of light measured.

However each individual electron moves at a very small fraction due to being accelerated by a potential difference but losing energy to scattering. This is different to a medium where the particles are fixed in position but can vibrate a bit around this position, here the electrons can flow.

So to answer your question, the voltage (and E field) travels at the speed of light in medium, while the electrons travel much slower.

That's because QM is fundamentally non-relativistic. Learn some quantum field theory for a complete description of relativistic particle dynamics.

I guess I can put it this way:

In Newtonian dynamics position in 3N is a function of a universal time where N is the number of particles being described.

In QM the wavefunction is a function of 3N position and 1 time co-ordinate. This means particles are not described by points in space (delta functions) but by distribution.

In GR the position in 4N is a function of a proper time of the observer (so if I want to look at the dynamics of the particles I have to express the position of each one in 4space as a function of my time).

In QFT, the wavefunction is a function of 4N positions which are each a function of my proper time. This "function of a function" is called a functional.

That's the heart of it. The mathematics is that there is a probability distribution smeared out in space but the interpretation is a lot more interesting.

Input enough energy and you can locally excite this field into something "real" called a particle. This explains why all electrons are identical: they are made from the same underlying field!

This field operator makes up the Hamiltonian of a particle so it is easy to find how the wavefunction evolves with time.

I should add KG field describes a spin 0 boson (i.e the Higgs field).

This is a philosophical question of what the vacuum actually is. Is the vacuum a medium?

The point is the speed of light is constant for all observers while light travelling through a medium is relative to the medium. THis is very different behaviour so aether is not the right word to use.

These fields are underlying, they are excited producing particles but how these particles travel or through what is still the vacuum, not the aether (i.e creating a photon).

That's how I think about it. It's an interesting question about the direction of time.

Think about you memories like computer memories. All binary. To store some memory requires flipping a few bits which takes work. The way I get this work is from applying an electric field to the bits. The bit aligns with the field doing work against the frictional forces that stop it turning hence releasing heat to the environment.

Now the energy has left the bit which is now in a more aligned state. The entropy of the bit is lower but the entropy of the universe is greater.
