So, I thought it was a good idea to run /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread on /g/ to get some normies into GNU/Linux. Sadly this thread suffered too much from censorship and banhammers (like the rest of 4kids), so let's do a proper one (if welcome) in Holla Forums.
/fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread
First Edition
Welcome to /fglt/. We are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.
There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:
0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox). 1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything. 2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac. 3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux.
Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Visit the Friendly GNU/Linux Thread/Website: fglt.nl/
Thanks for the reminder: Do not talk to windows users.
Jason Cox
just leave already smh
David Rivera
So you are telling me that Holla Forums already knows everything and doesn't need a users-helping-users thingy?
Austin Johnson

Isaac Roberts
God, you are such a whiny little faggot.
Jack Moore
Why do people use void?
Alexander Moore
I went balls-deep, wiped everything on my laptop and installed GNU/Linux. I still have to use a DAW in Windows to arrange and automate older projects, but I've had no problems doing all that in a Win7 VM with 1.9GiB RAM and one core and one thread.

What are the practical limitations to the application of bash scripting for regular user tasks (i.e. maintenance). Also, is there anything I should be doing that I'm probably not.
Camden Edwards
I use Linux Mint. It is difficult to install things because I do not know what to do with .tar.gz files in order to install them.
r8 me
Wyatt Scott
we don't need a linux hugbox even in the op, he listed rtfm this thread is redundant
Cooper Harris
Linux mint is shit. Just use Ubuntu or better yet Debian
Xavier Lopez
Extract it like a zip then do: ./configure make make install
Parker White
Fedora special snowflakes not using fedora.
Joseph Myers
I tried that, it did not work. spoonfeed me!
I use Mint and there is downsides, it will not play any webms or mkvs but Debian is too difficult and I don't really want to change
Personally I suggest visiting The Grymoire, especially the SED section. It's fucking based.
Ethan Bailey
inb4 shitstorms

Mint is borderline-botnet my man. Try fedora, it's still pretty user-friendly and you're new to linux so a package manager switch won't be a big deal.
Hudson Diaz
ubun2 is worse than mint if we're looking at privacy.
Jack Lopez
Could you list the contents of the tar for us?
Oliver Sanders
Both are shit.
Ubuntu removes the freedom from GNU/Linux, Mint adds the franken into the Debian.
Gabriel Green
So, Ubuntu, amazon shit Mint, Frankedebian Fedora, RHEL testbed Manjaro, takes you back in time Arch, breaks every now and then Gentoo, made by a macfag running Google Chrome Debian, SJW
What's left?
Is there any bully-free, serious distro?
Luke Bailey
but I do not want to change
Mint
Blake Lopez
What the fuck man. Literally nobody is running Fedora. All you get are alpha packages, a Red Hat cock up your ass and the community packages place is literally a ghost town. For a reason: Nobody is fucking using Fedora.
However, the defining characteristic of social justice warriors is advocating for social justice, which is essentially an attempt to achieve perfect equity at any cost, including trampling things like equality, fairness, and freedom (especially freedom of expression, which is what SJWs most frequently go after). In general, any problem someone has is, according to the idea of social justice, the fault of oppression. SJWs most often advocate silencing "problematic" speech that they think "oppresses" "minorities", or "triggers" people, or makes certain people uncomfortable, or something to that effect.

Are new linux users welcome here?
Ryder Wood
we call "new linux" "rolling release"
Samuel Parker
What? I am new to linux and im certainly not rolling anywhere..?
Daniel Phillips

That's basically what the thread is about; oldfags spoonfeeding newfags.
