Dumbing of Age AKA Mary's Kampf - LITERAL CHRONO TRIGGER Edition

You know what? Just after I started this thread, Frog's theme from Chrono Trigger started playing in my shuffled playlist. That song out of over 45 days worth of music.

Forewarning: I haven't read more than a few scattered strips on Holla Forums.

On first reading, it appears this comic is attempting to tell a series of events that occurred prior by a character walking through the scene and imagining how it played out, or discovering the clues to it, or even literally seeing the ghosts that haunt them, culminating in them finally seeing the attempted suicide of a friend discovered by another. This is a turning point in the story; a realization of impact occurs to the in-universe viewer and the events are meant to in turn shock the reader with what happened.

The first major fuck up is the tone. When setting a tone for such a series of events, it is better to lead the reader into it and let them discover the meaning of the comic on their own. This is entirely thrown out of the window by the first line, where the author asserts the comic ends 'pretty damn rough', already informing you that something bad will happen, so you can't possibly be surprised. The use of informal language is also out of place, as it clashes with the seriousness you would otherwise take away from the topic. And people will read it. There is a slightly-larger and entirely centered 'HEY' at the top of the page, being the first thing you will see. The comic has been ruined by the first line. Likewise, anyone with a half-way decent reading speed and eyes that aren't completely non-functioning will be able to read that trigger warning while scrolling, ruining the final panel reveal. Then to top it all off, as if the tone wasn't already broken by this foreword, there's a joke at the bottom. There is no way anyone but the most immature people can take this seriously. To protect the sensitivity of a few, the impact to the many has been lost.

The concept of the comic is actually great. As mentioned, having a character walk through a series of events as a spectator is clever. It aligns them with the viewer, allowing the character to see something from a new perspective that causes an internal realization, but at the same time leaves them to act as a proxy for the audience. The characters that are involved are established in the first two shots so the reader knows what is going on, then those characters are made transparent to symbolize that the events are in the past while at the same time the viewer proxy is put into the background, aligning them as the spectator. Time has passed, but only enough for the new character to arrive on the scene. However, the spectator in this story shows no emotions. They remind me of AI characters from sci-fi shows, watching a hologram emotionlessly. Their hands are by their sides, their expression vacant of shock, especially notable in the final panel. Speaking of the final panel, the ghost effect has failed the author. I can't tell if that's meant to be horror or anger from a glance. The pose is wide and arms look stretched out to either side instead of flung up in horror. They look like they just jumped out of the closet and shouted, "RAAR, IMA BEAR".

Have to break this up in two posts.

The format of the comic is also just a travesty. If you ever want to reveal a dramatic series of events that are meant to have an actual impact, do not put them in a flat 4-panel format (or 5 in this case). I can see what the creator was going for. I can see it so well and maybe that's what makes me so mad. This is how the comic should have been formatted, and it is a crime that it is not put in an form that tried to be artistic.

If that red head has a chip on their shoulder, for example they're so busy with study they don't have time to help the people around them, but now this discovery will teach them to make time, I guarantee 100% that its the creator projecting into the comic. Yes you have a kid now. You don't have as much time as you used to. You still want to make the comic.

You must make a fucking choice. Either let your art continue to suffer at the behest of your life or spare more time for your comics to reach completion to a standard you are truly happy with, even if that means delaying their release by a day or two more so you can think them through, plan them out and polish them properly. I have zero sympathy for these comments Mr. Willis had to deal with (whatever they might have been), as he invited them in the moment he put a trigger warning on his comic. He sacrificed a piece of his comic for that warning. And that's terrible.

Final note, if they really wanted to put a trigger warning, they should have put the comic behind a spoiler button, said 'some material may not be appropriate, read comment below', had a comment explaining the comic dealt with a sensitive subject matter, and then below that have spoiler text that said 'Trigger Warning: Attempted Suicide'.

Good read and trips
Willis has regularly been incapable of dealing with the very emotions he's tried to convey; he constantly tries to make everything lighthearted, especially when they become painful.
Becky, the lesbian character seeing all those "ghosts" in the comic, is coming back to an empty home, basically, after her father tried to kill her and her girlfriend because he's a religious nut who felt his daughter has been made impure by homosexuality.
Thing is, he's then been put in a hospital, and Willis managed to create a scene and context where they were both touching. Becky tried to have a genuine emotion and sincerity, and it was, for a second there, about to become quite emotional and moving.
… and then he made her get up with a huge smile on her face, cry out "HAHA I DON'T CARE ANYMORE NOW FUCK YOU DAD I'LL GO FUCK A GIRL" and flipped him the double-bird
literally right after we were supposed to be moved and feel the scene was actually genuine

He's already given us our "Chrono Trigger" - Becky's presented memories of her mother's attempted suicide in ""the past"", that ""triggers"" certain readers. The Chrono Trigger is less of a physical object and more of an embodiment of possibility, and in Val's edit of that same strip, the possibility, wish and power of saving Mary is brought up for the first time in any of his edits. All we need left is the right time and place in the comics, and move on from there.

"Attempted to kill herself." This phrase might be important for later. While I do not yet know the time and place, one possibility is that Mary will try to kill herself in despair for whatever reason. That could be one moment that we can activate the switch.

We could use more OC for sure. I've tried my hand, but I can only go so far with my lack of skill.

What we need is for the events I described in to be illustrated, preferably before his next comic so that there's no confusion as to canon i.e. Mary doing things inside the DoAverse when she's supposed to be getting pulled into our copyverse.

Time will not move in the copyverse if OC isn't being created there, similar to how time doesn't move in the DCU until the next month's comics come out. This means that we can move as slowly as we need to, giving Mary enough time to adjust to the copyverse as possible before the universal overlap event occurs, which will basically work like a very, very small Crisis.

Don't panic! We aren't on a time limit. In Chrono Trigger, the party had all the time in the world, literally, and when the switch happened, it took them right to the moment they needed. We can see what happens to her before we do anything, but yes, it's likely that this is where the universes need to overlap if it doesn't end well with her.

We can't force this. A lot will happen on its own, without one or two people saying "okay we switched the Marys". What will matter is that we'll make an alternate version of this event that ends in Mary's favor somehow.

What I'm worried about is that her character will be altered to actually agree with the tranny, and once you start developing her character, it becomes a part of her forever. Sure, you can overwrite it, but it did happen.

As I've said before, we can't affect what happens in Willis's universe, just ours. That's why we need a place we both have access to, the transfer-verse, to switch Marys. So if something happens there, it becomes irrefutable canon.

I'm currently making an edit. I've not played chornotrigger, so I don't know if I'm missing some important rule, but essentially I'm just making some minor, fun edits to ensure that there will exist an alternate universe, with an alternate Mary.

In Chrono Trigger, it didn't matter if it was really a conscious clone because of what happens, but in this case, the clone will play puppet to Willis' writing. We could hypothetically make the clone out of anyone and anything so long as Willis believe it's his character, Mary, and he can make her say whatever he wants her to.

The copyverse will be all of our OC of her after the total overlap occurs.

And the thing to take Mary's place will be the copy-mary. The only content created of that version is the one in the OP. Willis can inscribe whatever personality he wants on to that one. It has no character so we don't care.

By complete coincidence, I figured the sheep stand I drew would have substitution powers. And now, this copy Mary will take the Canon Mary's place in the Canonverse.

When you have a release schedule, it's always good to have a buffer because you can never know what might happen that will prevent you from drawing. It also kind of raises questions about his writing and editing process, since you'd think that if he had these strips finished months in advance he would maybe want to go back every once in a while and see whether or not the story and characters progress in a way that actually makes sense and feels natural.

Turns out that even though the rest of the characters of the strip have the "birthright" from Willis to his favor by nature of the politics and thoughts he inserted into them, Mary herself has attained a different role due to how she grew as a character while none others did, even if it was due to Willis hating her. In a way, making her way to a better world in 8/co/ is her "Conquest".

Anyways though. This thread has me thinking; if Willis was in a specific mental state when he made Mary, and inserted everything he liked and found attractive at the time into her, does this mean her creation was a labor of love?

Well, take it from me, there IS a reason why people that like the girliest of animes would not like MLP. One can chalk it up to personal preference, especially if someone's more comfortable and used to weebshit compared to western entertainment. However, the big difference between something like Cardcaptor Sakura and My Little Pony is that, frankly, every asset for anime, music, animation, voice acting, money, you name it, is always above the effort that's put into most western cartoons. When someone who regularly watches anime like, say, Kuma-Miko, Lupin the Third, or Black Butler, they will likely be flat-out disgusted by the cartoons talked about here on Holla Forums.

The thing is that anime is serious business over at Japan and so as a result you've got Orchestras and Madhouse working on Cardcaptor Sakura.

And then you have MLP: FiM, which is mediocre, even for a western cartoon, with the animation and writing process being complete garbage. Lauren Faust is Craig McKracken's wife, but it doesn't mean the cartoon's she's involved with are gonna be as good. Maybe if Wonder Over Yonder came out earlier, this would have been obvious. The animation is literally copy-pasting the same two skeletons with the same sets of colors and hair in the background while having shots of the ponies completely sideways so that half the time you don't have to worry about animating in creative positions, and the music is just some fag with a xylophone.

I mean, to really give you an idea, bronies were made via meme-magic, as in a meme that MLP was a good show spawned from ironic shitposting and it got co-opted by a wave of autists that were formerly occupied with stuff like Sonic the Hedgehog OCs, as well as normalfags without ironic awareness for a short time. Also salty fans that would hang around the community and vehemently deny that the show lacks quality of any sort. People like anime because anime consistently contains a variety of high quality and stands out from the majority that was the western cartoons that you would have grown up with, especially throughout the past two and a half decades. This isn't to say that western cartoons can't be good, I just believe that there's a stricter placement of standards in Japanese-oriented entertainment that appeals to some of us.
