What the fuck happened to Newgrounds?
What the fuck happened to Newgrounds?

JewTube
Same thing as everywhere else, the world's coming to an end. Sadly for us the reasons to keep on living will go before life itself does.
Same thing that happened to Penny Arcade.
The guys in charge grew up, got married, had kids… they turned into normalfags. Perhaps that's what they really were all along.
Is that what happened to the Homestar Runner guys?
Then you fabricate one, and defend it to the death.
newgrounds is still a thing?
Didn't these guys turn into multimillionaires because of Castle Crashers? And Alien Hominid?
What are you even talking about?
Tom's appeal is obviously a response to the fact that running an ads-supported site that isn't populated by millions of people who don't know what adblock is is basically untenable now. This has nothing to do with whether he's a normie or not, lardo.
This. Youtube has a catchier name, was more "normie" friendly, and was one of the first places to basically turn a blind eye to video and audio piracy which caused a massive surge in its popularity. Youtubers took much of the best content from every existing noteworthy site at the time. Even Newgrounds content was being uploaded to youtube without approval or input from its creators, forcing long time Newgrounds users to create and maintain a presence there in order to protect their IP directly.
Alien Hominid, Castle Crashers and Battleblock Theater
…but their newest game "Pit People" is going to crash hard and I think they know it. I don't blame Tom for wanting his baby Newgrounds to at least be self-sufficient.
Additionally, JewTube's payout system is custom-tailored to fuck animators in the wallet.
Unless they can spit out 10-15 minutes of content a day, they have no financial future on JewTube and all the views in the world amount to a few bucks for a year's worth of work.
It still exists, if that's your question.
The lights are on, but nobody's home.
It wasn't when they first migrated.
Basically, a lot of animators first moved to YouTube because, back before the Reply whores forced them to change the algorithm, they got paid more than Newgrounds if their videos ended up being popular, which they usually were (Newgrounds creators of course had a fairly established fanbase that would follow them anywhere).
So Newgrounds people effectively dumped Newgrounds wholesale to chase that JewTube gold and for a while they prospered.
Then the algorithm change happened, and most people from NG either went into making simpler, short form content (like Let's plays) or found proper studio work, or were left between a rock and hard place. Fulp tried to lure some of them back by promising them a similar sort of deal to what they were getting on JewTube before the algorithm change, but because Newgrounds is less popular, obviously it didn't take off as well.
Yeah, Fulp has always ran contests and stuff like that (I think at one time it was $200 for the best submission of the week) in lieu of advertisement profit-sharing; they were never a big payout, but I don't think Newgrounds itself ever made a ton of money (Fulp's video game studio the Behemoth is obviously another story).
The video on the top of the front page has about 8,600 views so that gives you an idea of how many people are left there, probably roughly the same amount of people use Newgrounds as use Holla Forums come to think of it, considering most users on Holla Forums have two or three boards they contribute to on a semi-regular basis.
If I recall Fulp actually said that he couldn't do quite as well as the deal they once had on youtube. Most pure animators were simply blown the fuck out as a result like this guy
True, but as I recall he did make a good point that, since JewTube isn't paying them for exclusive content, there wasn't any reason why people couldn't post on both.
Which is why Youtube Red was incredibly fucking retarded. Youtube has always been quanitity over quality. It costs me exactly nothing to fling my arms around like a monkey at a screen while playing videogames. And it takes no effort. Animation takes a lot of effort. Even the bare bones shit takes some sort of effort.
Literally a response to the Netflix model
They expected Pewdiepie to compete with tv shows with budgets in the millions. They should've been smart enough to realize that their top content contributors were all second hand, taken from the games and movies they were watching.
Man, they must have been smoking some good crack when they wanted to tango with the Netflix model.
Have they given up on that shit, yet?
I think there would be enough idiots to support it.
Is there still a "just want to do away with ads, even though Adblock is a thing" demo?
No one's that retarded.
going offtopic but youtube is 99.9% content I would never pay or even watch ads for. I would deal with ads for the content I consider with it but adblocker programs need to be set up for options for channels.
Going back to the topic Newgrounds users didn't really make any money and majority of them did it for fun. Lots of content was made because they enjoyed it and wanted to. Now they need to justify it with profit. Now it's well known you can easily make money on the internet no one wants to make anything for fun as they feel like it would be a "waste".
They still got meet n fuck?
Killing celb games and farting video game movies?
It's unbelievable how even Assassin became so pussified when Tom became a sell-out.
They finally got their break making kid's TV or something.
I think the main problem was (aside Youtube) that the overall content of the site changed drastically. Back in the day it was amateur edgy stuff, usually involving gore in some way. Nowadays thanks to Egoraptor and animators like him, Newgrounds is filled with unfunny parodies of tv shows, video games or shit like that simply because people watch that stuff more.
I kinda hope Newgrounds would go back to the days of niche and do its own thing instead of trying to compete with Youtube animators. and their shitty, unfunny memeshorts about video games.
I do have an animated music video in progress and when it gets done sometime after summer, probably going to post it on Newgrounds as well if the ContentID system decides to fuck me over for using unlicensed music, DESPITE disabling the ads from it.
IIRC on sleepycast tom talked about this shit, one for awhile in the last ep of their season 1 podcast and I think again in S2
After deserting their fanbase only to crawl back like apathetic grandpas. I admit the new cartoons can be fun, but I still think they could handled all this better. They crumbled an empire and now they're just sometimes playing in the ruins.
the world already ended with first world war.
If anything the quality of the content has seen a lateral progression, at least conceptually. The animators have gotten somewhat better in general I feel.
probably has something to do with the better animation software available
really, the problem with newgrounds is more than it's just kinda there but no one wants to go
youtube, for better or worse, is the standard uploading site. animator can't succeed there, but they still upload because it's where they can get the most views. whereas newgrounds is basically tailored for them, but not enough people go there
and after disney shitcanned all of those people, youtube's had a huge influx of animators in there
if i were to suggest anyone a go-between for this, I'd suggest truncating your videos for youtube, if not outright keeping every animation away from youtube because of their ultimate cold shoulder to the entirety of the animator community & uploading everything you want onto NG out of spite if anything
Is the site still entirely flash-based? That shit don't work on mobile.
they got mp4 support iirc
I think they've been on html5 since 2012
t. guy who read a wikipeda article
Worked with some NG animators and devs for a couple of years.
Here's what I got.
Like any social site, it's hard to be open to everyone whilst valuing the good content and hiding the shit.
YouTube is the prime example. Videos which actually took time and effort to make (like for example animation, one of the most time consuming things ever) get overshadowed by a billion reaction videos, gaming LPs and cat vids.
This is the reason why NG created this sort of approval system where you can only post on the actual content portal if enough people vouch for you.
Until then, your stuff will be on a secondary page and won't really be featured on the site.
That way, the site will support only high quality animation and games and discard the bad shit so they don't overshadow the good and everything will be perfect, right?
WRONG
They COMPLETELY overestimated what their userbase thinks is good.
Parodies would INSTANTLY get on the actual portal, regardless of how hideous it looks, just because lol haha that's Mario, I recognize him lol.
Anything non-comedic would get a thousand views at MOST.
The amount of low quality porn was so fucking huge it needed it's own page, which became bigger then the actual one.
And the content which actually got big was mainly relying on internet memes or the kind of lol so random garbage humor like the stuff you see in Source Film Maker videos today.
So the content WASN'T properly curated and in order to get any views, you had to follow the same trends everyone else is, everything looked the same, nobody put any effort into their shit because why would you (except for Pico Day submissions maybe) and public interest in an animation-only website quickly died out.
There were other reasons as well why NG died.
A lot of would-be animators decided to do machinmation instead.
People like Shippidge, Dexterboy127, Matt Vargas, GuitarmasterX7, etc were just people who realized that if they'd do actual animation, they'd only draw video game characters anyways so why not just record them directly from the game itself.
It's easier to make and reaches the exact same audience, which made machination more attractive then NG, Machinima grew fast and soon got bigger then NG itself, until that entire genre self-destructed when gameplay commentary happened.
Also, at some point, YouTube got so stupidly huge because literally every alternative to it except Dailymotion just simultaneously gave up.
So even if your animation wasn't featured anywhere, the amount of people who'd just stumble on your shit would be greater then the amount of people actively seeking you out on NG.
The arrogant attitude of the NG community which actually stuck around for all those years doesn't help either.
These people tend to be overly critical or just straight up mean, which isn't very inviting for people who are looking to get into animation or flash deving.
The final nail in the coffin though was when they started to accept actual video files.
You now have ACTUAL cat videos on Newgrounds.
Like, just fuck off, Tom. What the fuck are you doing!?
also makes a good point.
Most content on the internet is consumed via smartphones, most of which don't support the flash format, which means you've already lost a billion people by default.
To bring up the Homestar "comeback" again…
What am I supposed to see, Mr. Dubs?
That's literally the site on an iPhone
Fuck it, let NewGrounds burn.
That hypocritical piece of shit Tom deserves to have his site go under. Does anyone else remember when he removed the game about the Sandy Hook shooting because it was "offensive"? This is the same piece of shit who made his own game about school shootings when Columbine was still fresh in everyone's minds.
the detective game? i used to fap like crazy to the fucking hentai in that shit. same with frank's quest/adventure.
Which he defended tooth and nail because freedom of speech.
And it went on to become a cornerstone of the site's culture.
Yes, I remember.
Fuck you, Tom.
I REALLY want to see the meeting they had for this shit
What if we took our completely free model that the entire world uses, and just make people pay for it?
quality-wise yeah. Content-wise the stuff has gotten more stale and boring. Its just video game characters talking to each other.
I never realised after all these years how much effort was put into those very well animated (for their time) flashes. And keep in mind, this was years before superior animation software existed. Even the most simple animations using modern animation software like stick figures (remember xiao xiao?) is time consuming and frustrating. I can understand why everybody more or less gave up. Not to mention, the modern internet is vastly different today than it once was, no thanks to SJWs and other crusaders sticking politics where they don't belong and making mountainous scandals out of non-issues.
What about the porn from that place? Is it still revelant?
You know what really saddens me about most SJWs on the internet? They use to be the opposite in the past. Most SJWs didn't pop out of nowhere after 2007 or whenever, most of them have already been on the internet for a long ass time. Hell, it almost seems like the edgier someone was in the past, the bigger the SJWs they are today.
SJWs are about an even mix of people who were never really on the internet til Facebook and suddenly realised the kids are saying naughty words, and former edgelords who are now desperate for acceptance
Hell, the edgelords are still acting exactly the same way, just with different words and aesthetics.
Most of it seems to be pre-alpha demos put up to raise awareness of their patreons.
I don't think Tom's an SJW, but he definitely mellowed down trying to make NG more friendly to the new generation on the internet. still doesn't really help him
Say what you will about the quality of NG content, but I think it's better to have a community that will criticize your work - albeit harshly, than to just say "good job" or throw an upvote/reblog. People of afraid of that shit shouldn't be doing it in the first place.
But then that same community upvotes shitty video game parodies. So you got an overly critical community that couldnt tell if something is good quality animation if it punched them in the face.
there's a difference between constructive criticism and just telling people to kill themselves
take a look at egoraptor's shitty animations. people just LOOOVE those on NG
and there's a difference between telling you that chis-chan is better at both art and writing than you and telling you to slit your wrists
I know you see a lot of uninspired shit on the frontpage, but the Portal History shows very few of it. Granted it's slowly rising in recent years like back when sprite movies were popular.
Both of those exist on NG, user. It's up to you who you listen to.
Well, that's your opinion.
