Lesbian porn passes it and a story (film, TV show, book, etc.) featuring, say, two strong, independent wimmin that don't need no man, one of which is a mob boss and the other an assassin, fails the test because they are two wimmin talking about (the murder of) a man.

I'm so sick of seeing this argument. As if crotch bulges are actually what would work as "female fanservice". Do you see a bunch of women wearing low-cut tops and visible thong straps when trying to get attention from men at the bar? Yes you do. Do you see a bunch of guys with socks stuffed in the front of their jeans and stylized codpieces? No you fucking don't. You see guys flashing cash and talking about their big house and important business trips. And low and behold, most male superheroes would be fantastic providers and husbands. And it feels like every movie needs to remind us that they are ready and willing to literally die for the sake of the female lead's well being.

The next time a woman asks where the crotch bulges are, ask her to point out a few examples of female characters who sacrifice their lives or their happiness for the sake of the male love interest.

In a purely random conversation, the Bechtel test is likely to fail 80% of the time. The Bechdel is simply about having less men, not about women doing anything.

Like, take Namor for instance…still the only consistent male example in comics. There aren't many guys who bemoan Namor because, despite everything, he's a still a Flying Brick Heroic Sociopath who is the friggin King Of Atlantis. You couldn't take Wonder Woman, Power Girl, or Tigra and switch their gender and have them draw the same kind of ire as the female counterpart does. In fact, I've said many times that if I thought women were actually interested in it, I'd advocate for a lot more Female Gaze.
