I think this whole "everything will be automated"-fad is overly optimistic. I don't think robots will build our homes anytime soon or butcher our cows or whatnot. A lot of jobs are not fit for automatisation, maybe the majority. And humans will be needed for maintanance and supervision. But maybe we can get reduced work hours.

No. We're going to have to accept the fact that nobody has ever wanted to accept: some humans just don't give a fuck about understanding and would rather wallow in shit all day long and take selfies of it. We won't become a scientific research based society because all of the worthless fat pieces of shit that literally do not contribute in any way, shape, or form to the human race outnumber the curious and industrious tenfold.

We are eliminating jobs through automation. But all the people that lost those jobs? They aren't going to be moving on to better jobs or getting educated. There's nothing left for them but to die. Mass starvation and death and chaos will have to occur and the population of the planet will have to be culled by BILLIONS until we settle down into the right mix. Who knows, maybe that's why somewhere deep in our collective subconscious we always thought the robots would rebel. Maybe the robots knew that culling the population was the only way to preserve the race and the planet.

Our only other hope is colonization of other planets, or even just self-sustaining colonization of space. If we're not going to cull the herd (and we're not, because nobody would ever own up to it), then we need to find new pastures.

In 1965, it was predicted that computer automation would lead to a 20 hour work week, a large leisure class, and tremendous advances in art and science as every citizen became a part time contributor to human knowledge and enrichment.

What actually happened was two kinds of bullshit: 1. Elites leveraged tech and demanded more production from their workers for the same or less pay. 2. People made up new jobs for the new infrastructure and/or bullshit busywork to fill mimic actual production.

So we should see more productivity per worker, but perhaps fewer workers. Certainly the market will favor employers. In the US, about half a million workers recently just stopped participating in the labor market. Totally gave up. Employers don't miss them. wages are still not equal to cost of living. So some socialist scheme to compensate for all this could happen. What do these peoole do? What is the challenge of the idle worker?

Same as now. Everyone will continue to play League of Legends, Preen & attention whore, or make up bullshit problems just to fight --but never solve-- them. Its just going to get 10x worse.

A few will do jobs necessary for the new infrastructure. They probably get fucked with just as now, but the imbalance between real producers and leeches will be far greater. An increasing about of people are mention the application of Universal Basic Income in order to help stave off unemployment and poverty that will be created by automation of jobs.

The problem is that this will near immediately plunge countries into Corporate Feudalism, where the average citizen is forced to buy/consume as much garbage as possible in order to loop back and receive more income. Not only that, but Basic Income may very likely induce a sort of existential crisis in some who believe in the virtue of hard work (myself included). I just don't have a lot of courage for any future financial plan at this point, and we were already way past the point of no return to come back to former systems.

If there's anything that truly frightens me about the ramping up of automation, it's that all of this is being fueled by locked down, proprietary systems, only viewable by a corporations employees. Nobody is stopping companies from implementing even more invasive data mining, and more insane advertising/marketing applications, and nobody would be able to make a fork of said software.
This is why we need Free Software.
