That's not actually true.
The length of the rail has expanded due to heat. Metal does a funny thing when in extreme temperatures where it becomes more compact when it's cold and expands when it's hot, kind of like dough.
Now, you wouldn't be able to place a chunk of iron on a hot grill and expect it to increase in size in front of your eyes, the difference can sometimes only be noticed on a microscopic level. On a railway however that's miles and miles long the sum of the tiny tiny amount of metal being expanded can become clearly noticable, and on pic related the rails have escaped the rivets supposed to keeping it steady.
Most railroads are built to deal with this phenomenon, but every once in a while some piece breaks and you have a situation like this.
