i am generalizing here, but i think it's an implicit belief among westerners that cartoons, as a medium, aren't "good enough" to take themselves seriously. somewhere in the deep recesses of public consciousness, cartoons are inherently childish. but the animated sitcoms are appropriately self-aware and self-deprecating, so adults can indulge them like a guilty pleasure without feeling too silly about themselves.

Ironically enough, the way they go about it is even more childish than many actual children's cartoons. Rather than support stuff like the cartoon in OP, they get crap that's so unfunny and irritating that only the most kiddy of adults could enjoy it. Like Family Guy.
