Some printers use cartridges with a chip on them which counts prints, time since first use or w/e, and the printer will refuse to work when they reach the limit, even if there is ink left or you refilled it.
The chip contacts are usually gold plated. You pay for the chip, and the gold plating.
Some printers do not include printer heads, but "cheap " "disposable" ones are included in the cartridges, usually driving up the cost even more.
My printer includes a high quality printer head, which is not that much more expensive. Most Brother printers do.
