I think the categorization of Stalin as paranoid is unfair. It was completely logical for Stalin to be paranoid, just as some degree of paranoia is appropriate among our own Right. Stalin was an active Bolshevik for 2 decades before the Revolution and was arrested and exiled numerous times, police infiltration was a constant presence among Russian revolutionaries (much like us), Stalin had to kill a few of them himself IIRC.

It's honestly healthy to develop a sense of paranoia in such circumstances, and that's what allowed him to rise to the top of the Party and eventually the nation.
