The way I see it, the soldiers are drawn from different demographics compared to other forces.

In the British army you're with your mates, there's hardly any Blacks, the soliders can relate to one another as comrades, everyone has pretty much the same culture, (working-class British) in the enlisted ranks, so there's a kind of esprit de corp and brotherhood. You know you're not going to die alone.

In the American army it's nearly 50% non-White, your "brothers" largely don't share your culture or heritage, they don't even speak like you, you don't have that shared bond, it's not like being with family and that realization plays on your mind so that in the decisive moment you're left thinking "If I'm wounded am I going to die alone? Is the guy next to me looking out for me or is he more concerned about his nigger/latino brother 50 yards away?"

The less racial and cultural uniformity there is in a force, the more disunity and fear. As for the recruiting demographic, in the UK young men don't generally sign up out of desperation/for education down the line, because education is easy to get even if you're poor. This combined with the higher homogeneity means better morale. That's my take on it at least.
