There's kind of a theme that Mabel is more liked and socially adept despite her weirdness because she's cute, cheerful and puts great effort into getting people to like her. She can get away with being awkward and weird at times because it's part of her charm, though she may not get away with that forever. She's creatively talented and puts a ton of effort into it; kind of a synthesis of both the Grunkles in that respect; Stan is very creative about bullshitting and comes up with all kinds of crazy stuff for the Mystery Shack, while Ford isn't just a genius but works very, very hard at what he does.

Dipper is more normal in comparison, somewhat obsessive and nerdy but not really to shut-in levels. He's also pretty obviously very intelligent, he's just insecure about it because his social skills aren't as good and he's not a cartoon genius. The adults like Mabel but prefer Dipper when they're actually getting stuff done, because Dipper's mature enough to listen and smart enough to keep up. Sounds right. Thing is, it actually starts to reflect on Mabel once Dipper starts hanging out with Ford- someone who actually gets along with him as well as trusting him, and Mabel is so used to having Dipper to help her and bail her out it makes her realise she's not always going to have everyone willing to support her. She kind of has a theme (especially in Summerween) that she knows her childhood is ending and is trying to make the most of it, because she has no idea how she's going to handle the future.

Especially since she identifies more with Stan, who struggled to get by without Ford while Ford did just fine on his own. (At least til Ford's mistakes caught up with him) Though she and Ford still like each other and get along great. It was a little bit of both, I think. Disney's current business model pretty much revolved around releasing new episodes like hostages to milk reruns for all their worth, but considering how so much of the new blood in the industry right now seem to be extremely inexperienced with actually working on shows, that kind of erratic scheduling probably didn't give them much incentive to do things in a timely manner. It also probably didn't help that, from the sounds of it, Alex Hirsch didn't officially decide to end the series until season 2 was about halfway over - so everyone most likely had to scramble to try wrap everything up.

On the one hand, I can kind of see why. All things considered, Gravity Falls was a fairly ambitious project take on for Hirsch's first time being a show creator. Especially since he was co-writing every episode, voicing 3 (arguably 4) major characters and some minor/background characters, and occasionally some of the artwork on top of all his supervising duties as the creator/producer of the show. He was basically doing the work of what would normally be done by 5-6 other people.

On the other hand, it's also hard not to notice that pretty much every problem with Gravity Falls' pacing stemmed from Hirsch being a wishy-washy faggot who couldn't commit to a plan.

At least we get a show that has an arc with a beginning, middle and definite ending, rather than being cut off suddenly without any resolution or dragging on forever (or both!) as Holla Forums is so used to. Or episodes shifted around to different studios or rushed out, or forced premature plot development, or…

Yeah, given how many ways it could have gone wrong I'm not complaining. Too much. Hopefully they make some other good stuff.

Depending on how you look at it, Not What He Seems, while a great episode, could qualify as this - at least for the "premature" part.

Apparently it was intended to be the season finale to the second season rather than in the mid-season finale. But between the lengthy hiatuses and so many people figuring out the twist about Stan's brother during those hiatuses, Hirsch decided to write the episode early, which is pretty much what set the stage for starting all the plots that were originally meant to be for a season 3.

I agree with you it's probably for the best that the show quit while it was ahead though. The ending was nothing spectacular, but it was satisfying enough. That's probably a lot better than the alternatives would've been.

Soooo Blu-Ray at 1080p with all the episodes except roadside attraction and counting weirdmaggedon 3 as two episodes, including all the shorts, deleted scenes and tv spots all packed alongside journal 3 in a steel box the shape of the portal when?
