How does one become knowledgeable about film? How does one become respected at it? If I wanted to know math or a language, it's quite clear how I go about it. But things like this don't follow the same sort of technical progress.
What are resources to jump into?
No "muh subjective" bullshit plz, if that is the case then you automatically disqualify yourself as being an expert because there is nothing to be an expert at, if it's arbitrary.
>most of it is old commie propaganda and porn films that explore "adult" themes

If you have a better list I am very interested.

Just buy it goy.

I wouldn't really know where to begin either, but if I had, I'd start with Pre-Code era movies – everything up to 1934.
Bentley Turner
Still cheaper than paying for film school, user. I think he's got a point.
Some Pre-Code movies were considered lewd and indecent enough, not sure about the commie propaganda, Holla Forums.

You'll know it when you see it. In general some of the picks on the list would confuse most normalfags. This is the same film list that contains the Beastie Boys Video Anthology, This is Spinal Tap, Robocop, Shoah, Armageddon, Being John Malkovich, and Fantastic Mr. Fox alongside "arthouse" films, Kurosawa, Terry Gilliam, and Laurence Olivier.
After a certain point you start to realize that some of the directors cherished by "film enthusiasts" got away with a lot of fetish films and even in their prime they were taken super seriously. So they could use their money and fame to make fetish fuel pass for art. Take for instance Ingmar Bergman's Persona, which is part of the collection. It's a "Swedish psychological drama" if you believe wikipedia and it's supposed to be up to its neck with deep themes. Then you watch it and it's about two batshit insane women. The casting was handpicked by Bergman because when he got sick once he only had his sexual fantasies to keep his mind occupied and he thought a lot about two particular actresses fucking young teenage boys. Once you get to a certain point where you realize a lot of "serious" films were an excuse for fetish fuel, propaganda, and other lame excuses you overall start to distrust a lot of lists and criterion collection is no exception. In the case with Persona, since Bergman is a big name director with artsy film enthusiasts and is taken seriously, pseudo-academics get to use the film as a reference for whatever propaganda they want to justify. Even wikipedia buys into that, but then again that's wikipedia for you.
I'll be fair and say that my qualms aside Criterion Collection is an okay place to start and the guys who own it seem to not really take themselves seriously. But my point still stands. Like with anything, don't believe the hype. Even in the world of "serious" films, there's a lot of bullshit, propaganda, fetish fuel dressed up as film, and combinations of all of the above.

Fair enough, which is probably why it's better to explore the CC on your own according to your tastes, and doing research on each movie/genre you're watching, rather than discussing it in some classroom surrounded by a bunch of entitled trust-fund kids who think they're hot shit, thinking they're the next Tarantino.
I'm not really into exploitation/blaxploitation movies, I feel like they were the equivalent of capeshit back in the '70s, but there are some good movies in there.
Nathaniel Ramirez
Just pirate everything you see and start watching it. I've learnt a lot in one month of compulsive pirating than in my whole life. And don't get squicky by the oldier films, go for them, check them out.
Brayden Bailey
Stay away from critics, they're stupid and don't know anything.
Read up on media analysis, most of it's just psychology applied to movies. Take or leave any amount of it. Some of it's fucking retarded "Male gaze" horseshit, and Freudian garbage applied to horror movies.
You'll learn more about movies by watching them, and then reading or watching interviews by the writer and director.

I have found that the best way to expand your knowledge of film is to read the Trivia pages for movies on IMDB, even for films you have no intention of watching. Wikipedia is also a good place to read about films.

What is a "tripfag", and are you implying there is something wrong with furries? Furries are people just like you and me and deserve the same rights as anyone else. And even though I may think that their fetish is disgusting, as a Libertarian I support their right to partake in their fetish, as long as everybody consents.
Carter Garcia
Dont forget to filter too.

Are these the non-commie movies or the commie movies?
