I actually liked how few Aliens the original trilogy had it felt right. Other than a few places mostly in Return of the Jedi (Ewoks / Jabba's palace) which were a bit over the top aliens were an interesting element of the story that did not overwhelm the story of the main characters. The prequels over saturated their worlds with aliens and none were memorable save Jar-Jar because of how much he sucked.

For George Lucas, it was Joseph Campbell's intellectual influence that made Star Wars possible and sadly it was Joseph Campbell's personal influence that ruined it.

Campbell's monomyth is powerful. Had Lucas just made the 3 original films and peaced the fuck out everything would have been fine and he'd literally be remembered as a god instead of an awkward toad-man who sold-out and actually isn't very good at storytelling. The problem was, he was committed to (((exploiting))) Star Wars for (((profit))) early on.

In retrospect, the smart thing would have been to stretch the entire Luke Skywalker bring-balance-to-the-force quest out for 20 or 30 years, but Lucas never had the insight into what he was doing. He finished the monomyth in 3 films and then decided there was more story to tell. ok? So, wot do?

Well, he didn't have a goddamn clue and neither did Joseph Campbell, his mentor. The problem was, while Campbell was really great with mythology, he's really shit with cosmology. He hates religion and was fairly vocal about it and he sort of shits on any meaning or bigger picture in order to shit on Catholicism and faith in general.

This means that Lucas and whoever takes over after him are doomed to at best repeating the same myth over and over again or at worst becoming Star Trek where the "cinematic universe" becomes a mere status quo ante backdrop for telling disposable morality plays.
