well, this is oddly relevant

been for a while trying to reinvent old teenage-years sonic fancharacters and that kind of shit, both mine and others I remember, into a looser, more "disney comics"-ish, "children's anime"-ish style, in a cyberpunk setting. Recently spent a whole day waffing in a city with a notepad, and ended up sketching a ton of characters, which I'm now refining. This is one such pass. Since so far I'm mostly just doing this for the designs themselves, I don't have specific stories going on, although just by the fact I'm shoving all these together, I'm starting to get ideas.

looking good design wise.

The character design itself isn't the character so much as the primary look/uniform of a private army of infinitely disposable children/really convincing midgets.

These little assassins were tailored specifically for their boss's tastes, and are paid only in candy.

The kids that still have families typically live semi-normal lives, save for whenever they're assigned on some mission, so another child must cover for them at home while the child going on the mission does their thing.

Thanks to the regular frequency of deaths/mysterious disappearances suffered by Buttons, many parents find that "their" children are acting strange or different from hours or even days ago.e

Their main thing is getting hired for ridiculous assassination jobs with little to no stealth needed at all, gladitorial style battles for private enjoyment, mundane tasks, and the occasional odd job

Yeah, yea, I already get it's cancer, but it's not even mine, it's my "friends" own. As for story, they never explained too much on it because I guess they don't want to spoil it or some bs like that. I doubt they'll ever actually work on any sort of webcomic in the future so it's pointless to not tell the backstories for the characters. The bunny is supposed to be some sort of adventurer in the woods, the other bunny-thing ((in the second and third pics)) is supposed to be a god named Willow, and the edgy black nigger with no nose is just a persona, at least that's what I presume.

A bit on the edgy side but they have a soild feel.

I already like the design.

Not bad, a lot of the designs loom great. Just finish up on the story and share it.

Thank for the input the character was made to be a character sheet for practicing with animations later on. Wanted to make it simple to execute multiple times for fluid and clean animations.

Pretty good user, but I'm a sucker for miniature robots ever since I played ChibiRobo. I think the one on the end is my favorite, but I think maybe the face should be black with the eyes\mouth white to keep in line with the others.

Cute, what's the story behind this one

Bare with me here, the idea's in it's document stages so if this sounds cliche you have all right to tear this concept a new asshole.
So the little guy is called a Mite, mite are somewhat small automatons that have been living underground for years thriving and interacting with various robotic beings.
Mite are standard robots able to construct and build massive underground cities to house both themselves and whatever comes in contact with them. They are quite friendly and tend to be timid around newly discovered creatures or information.
This mite's purpose in the story is pretty simple at first.
Let's call him Little.
Little is a mite with a function (Renascentia) to replicate nearly any form of information with any material or substance that can withstand it's shape. For example Little can literally turn metal into gold, however, if the object in question is destroyed to a certain degree the replication process will cease.
Sorry if it seems out of place, i'd like to make this into a comic of some sorts just gotta get the priorities in order first. Got the beginning and end just need to give the story some meat.

Are there any books or tutorials on designing characters with puppet animation and rigging in mind?

I want to avoid Johnny Text tier animation and designs but I'm finding it difficult to design characters that look good with tweened motions. Of course, other cartoons have had success in this area such as Dan Vs, Gumball, and though I hate to say it, MLP.

The more complex the design, the harder it is to make it look good as a puppet rig. You'll need more parts to hide the broken edges etc.
From my own small amount of experience, I've found that lining things up neatly is necessary only on held poses, the inbetweens are fine to be broken a little cause it'll move too fast for the eye to really notice.
As for avoiding Johnny Test tier animation, that comes from studying the old techniques and methods first (you do have the Animators Survival Kit don't you user?). Get good at those and after you've figured out the workflow for rigging, you'll make good rigged animation regardless.
I haven't properly seen Gumball, but Dan Vs and MLP do indeed have some of the best flash rig animation, nothing wrong with appreciating that. Dan Vs is more commendable in my opinion because with the ponies, they're not human, so their animation avoids the uncanny valley of quality as much as humanoid puppet rigs, as evidence by the drop in animation quality from the pony show proper, and its shitty human spinoff. In that regard, Dan Vs was better.

I just thought, if you download the game animation program Spine, it comes with 7 or so pre-built examples with animations, included in the free version too, they might be good for you to look at and see how they're constructed and work as a whole.

It's actually good to know that with some rougher designs you can avoid falling to Johnny Test quality just by having a foundation in animation, which I have, and yeah, I've read that book as well as many others, but only recently did I decide to make the switch to puppet animation. It's just to hard to handle the workload and deliver anything consistently when going the traditional route. Now I just need to figure out how to make them look nice. It seems a lot of the rules of normal animation design don't apply or carry over to rigged animation.

I've basically just been bullshitting and copying designs at the moment to see if I can pic up on anything.

Embed is a tutorial series about animating ponies from a fan that produced an absolute piece of shit fan animation called Double Rainboom, which was pure cancer. However, the tutorial starts from the very beginning of using flash to make and animate puppet rigs. If you can ignore the pony shit, you might find something of use.

I think making them look nice comes from the solid base of traditional animation skills.
But I've had much trouble with trying to get programs like Flash to simply do what I wanted it to do, because it requires a different mindset.
Traditional is more straightforward, I think, which is why I prefer it, but yeah, the workload is immense.
I found puppet rigs hard to understand because it involved creating a ton of body parts to move around rather than drawing them per frame, which I still prefer. But I use Spine at work now, which involves binding sprites to bones and moving the skeleton around, which is useful because you don't necessarily need to move every single bone/part, and it's easy to switch between sprites.

Luckily I've got all the stuff in the video down as well. The animation isn't hard at all, though now that I've moved over to Toonboom figuring out the software can be a little rough, but they have tutorials for that. Really, I just want to get better from a design stand point, though I wonder if I just need to reference designs I like more than trying to make them up off the top of my head. I know Richard Williams is big on "stealing like an artist" and uses numerous Looney Tunes characters as a base when designing.

And also, I know what you mean about preferring to draw each frame. It is a LOT simpler, but requires quite a bit of physical work vs technical work. The nice trade off when using puppet animation is that you don't have to sketch, ink, and color each drawing and can focus entirely on motion. In a way it's almost closer to 3D animation.

Pretty damn good, but some of the faces look a little off. Seems like you need to work a bit on drawing heads tilted forward.

Some characters seem to have a tad oversized cranium, which ends up giving them a bit of Code Lyoko vibe. Not that there's anything wrong with it, although Code Lyoko's art style was just revolting to me.

The idea is the following: A girl is trying to save her brother from some mysterious force, atop a mountain. With the help of her brother Guardian Spirit, she must fight some evil that has corrupted the forest.

Pretty simple, right?

And yeah, the Spirit Guardian is based on Stands, from Jojo Bizarre Adventure. I'm looking for other sources to make him more distict from the inspiration.

I'm just speaking out loud here but anyone else get tired of when someone does a comic that has anthro characters it's always some type of magic forest adventure thing? I had this conversation with an artist a few days ago who is doing a comic with anthro characters in a scifi environment and he expressed worry to me that the market for anthro characters is over saturated.

I told him it fairly is but the problem is that so many of them follow the same premise that you can have one which isn't in the same setting and you're instantly on a different path. In this case it'll be the forest/magic setting that alot of them like to make use of. I guess because it's intoxicating due to how pretty you can make the scenery look, maybe the designs would be easier to draw, I dunno but this setting is really overused for anthro characters.

Maybe is because it makes sense.

At least in my story, anyway, since the characters are bunnies.
And magic combine more with natural surroundings like the forest than with anything else, I suppose.

Was there a reason her brother was kidnapped or was it random choice? Did she already have the skills with the crossbow or learned it on the way?

Also looking at the girl's design. Why does she have a back quiver if she's using a pistol crossbow? It would make more sense for her to a pouch on her thigh holding the bolts. Also reaching back for those to reload a crossbow makes it more of a bitch especially during combat.

The plot is about the sister saving the brother, with the help of the spirit.

Is a basic story, but thats the idea.

here's some rough character art of a detective character I'm working on for an animation. It'll mostly be static poses with light animation (think Aqua Teen Hunger Force/Inferno Cop). How does this pose and design look at the moment?

Im not an expert but it honestly looks good, can't wait to see the final product.

The design is very typical and cliche but how big of a role does this detective play? If it's a bigger role then lose the fedora and trenchcoat. Keep the tie and maybe have a shoulder holster visible on him for his pistol (if he has one).

That's kind of what I'm going for. I wanted the pose and clothing to be slightly dynamic, but I wanted a viewer to instantly be able to tell he's your average rough around the edges detective.

He's the main supporting character of the show with the main character being the gag that I don't quite want to give away just yet.

He'll be heavily shaded (comic style) and have a yellow color scheme when I'm finished with the clean up. Basically, I just want to make sure the design reads and looks good.

oh, and I just wanted to say I appreciate the input and am not trying to defend it as a "muh style" sort of thing, just that the cliche aspect of the design was in mind when making him. Of course, if you can think of anything that might help make the character look better, I'm definitely taking notes.

Depends what's the setting?

Some current day city, probably going to go for a noir look. Don't know if I'm going to go downtown and get some pictures for the background, draw them, or make a collage.

It's going to be a comedy, but I want to give the art direction a slightly stylized, serious look to offset things.

Just refine your facial anatomy a bit. Do some light studies on the skull, and muscles in the face. They look pretty good but there are some slight proportional issues that look to be done by lack of knowledge instead of stylization. The issues I see are extemely minor though.

While the 2nd one is close to a point (the dude is a very conservative, traditional, reserved knight), the first one is actually just a very positive person. She loses a lot of fights and gets beaten a lot but she always stays enthusiastic and motivated for every next duel that follows.

You're not going to gain or lose much, the criticism or shitposting might just help or at least aspire you to create something different. It would really have to depend on the your current art level and their overall design. You can't create/ make things if you don't show them off and test the waters to see how they react. Here's a short (long for board standards I think) description:

Lily Himeros is a young Fire sorceress.
She spent most of her childhood and teen years in a magic academy (her mom was teacher there). With that she was able to learn most spells and tricks early which gave her more than enough free time to spare (which others spent learning).

She is very open and wanderlusty (is that a word?) person so she left her magic academy in search of adventure, travel and tests of skill. She used her beauty to travel cheap and since she is not the type to commit (to people and/or relationships), it doesn't bother her to be indecent from time to time.

She later joins a group of 2 introverts (the protagonist and his closest friend) and wanders with them around the continent (this is where the main story/plot starts)

TLDR: Extroverted, adventurous, seductive fire girl.

You can try chopping off her udders, most sea anemone reproduce asexually or through budding. If you really want make it a feminine design then emphasize her hips more. The appendages/ tentacles should always be around the mouth area or she could have a dwarf like body (Head fused with chest, no neck) while her tentacles would make the majority of her figure.

I left the thread after posting in the hopes that there would be less shitposting without my presence. I came back to lurk when I saw a huge burst of activity a couple days ago. If I'd known that the shitposting would continue anyway, I would've just kept on posting content.

Thanks for actually giving me some specifics to work with. The weirdness with the nose stems from a stylistic quirk that I'm trying to curb. I typically include a line delineating where the shadow falls beneath the nose, and I was exaggerating it far more than necessary, hence the cat-like appearance. I still don't see the "mannish" aspect of the jaw that people are talking about. It's a bit angular, but then the whole character is rendered with a fairly angular aesthetic.

That might be the most genuinely insulting thing anyone has directed at me in this thread.
