How are there still people watching the Simpsons? Is it really that popular over in the States because here in the UK I never hear anyone talk about the new episodes. It's too late. The show has become smug Homer talking to smug celebrtities while Lisa stands on a soapbox. It's been that way too long.

Underaged who heard about The Simpsons being one of the big shows of our time without really knowing about the being shit for longer than it's been good part, people who just plain will watch anything, people who will watch anything animated and people who download it every now and then to check out if it managed to get worse than it was last time they downloaded an episode.

The real thing keeping it alive however is its renown alone, this is why they're pulling this "longest show" stunt to give it a boost in its renown. It's one of those shows that at this point exists only because it's all the network broadcasting it has to show for themselves, it has become part of their identity. They're the network with The Simpsons and they need people to always remember it even if The Simpsons itself has become irredeemable.

Pretty sure their rating were way down like 5-6 years ago. I don't think they recovered any. It probably went down even further but…. what are you going to replace it with? Bob's Burgers? Family guy? Fox has nothing except a brand that used to be something

As a middle aged GenXer, I apologize for keeping this shit going for so long. I haven't even enjoyed a season for years, now, but only stopped watching it this year. It was more background noise if anything.

I actually tried watching one of the late season's episodes last night, I think it was 26 or so, it seriously felt like a Family Guy episode.

Fox only have themselves to blame. They cancelled everything they had that was of value. They cancelled Futurama, and during its first run it could have easily succeeded The Simpsons in terms of quality. They cancelled The Critic, the second time. King of the Hill got treated like shit. There were probably a bunch of other shows on Fox that were good that they just pulled the plug on.

I watched that episode. Homer's Ancestors who looked like the family own a slave. The slave makes donuts for his master not-homer and not-marge. The slave and not-marge run off to Canada. Not-homer is a slave master he holds a whip. Not homer falls into a canyon and something and dies. The doughnut-making slave and not-marge get married. The slave becomes not-homer 2.0.
