>>520834041wait this is great
Post 16 bit music that is baffling for the erayoutube.com
Plok is kino.
>>520834041Before CD audio became the standard composers pretty much needed to know how to program if they wanted to make video game music. That's why Genesis music has a lot of crap but then you got huge bangers like youtube.com
>>520834692This. Right up there with Mischief Makers for underrated af games.
>>520834041TIMFOLIN
>>520834041Tim Follin was probably an actual wizard to be manipulating these old ass fucking sound chips into doing his bidding.
>>520835186he did the same for silver surder on the god damn NES. he is a wizard
youtube.com
>>520834041SNES had music created using samples which means in theory, it can pull absolutely insane shit off. A lot of developers weren't able to do much with it because it was new hardware at the time but some people were definitely able to like Tim Follin. The sample based hardware can be used today to do insane shit like this:youtube.com
>>520834041Here's a shitty equivalent from the same platform and era: youtube.com
>>520835258The issue with sample is that eat tom of memory. when shit is at premium you either shove more game or music, albeit some late releases have crazy stuff like tales having CD quality shit with vocals. It had extra chip tho.
>>520835258It's kind of impressive that he managed to figure out its true potential in the short span it was relevant, considering most composers never did.
>>520835287man I loved this game
>>520835258I remember someone using the SNES sound chip to play CD quality audio. The problem was storage space for cartridges could never hold that sort of stuff as well as a game.
>>520834041You thought that was crazy. Listen to this shit. youtu.be
Remember when tim composed the ost for fucking Pictionary on NESyoutube.com
>>520834041>When the boss finishes with his Monologue
>>520834674youtube.com
>>520835615This is the song that always sounded completely impossible to me, but after >>520835258 it makes a bit more sense.
I expected a sequel darn you op!
>>520834992youtube.com
>>520834041And there are STILL people who think that the Genesis sound chip sounds better.
>>520835892It's better to say more people were capable of getting the most out of the Genesis sound chip. Shit like Follin's music is an exception, not a rule.
>>520835454That Solstice theme is so fucking good
You guys really should play Plok, it has a slow start but it becomes really fun later on, plus you can appreciate all of Tim's music instead of focusing on just a few.One example:youtube.com
>>520834041What the fuck, what year is this from?
>>520835852The Gem Engine was absolute shit and you could only use the default soundfount. How the fuck does this sound like a high end Snes game?
Yeah, Tim is great on the later hardware, but how about the fact that he managed to get the most out of even the ZX Spectrum?youtube.com
>tfw missed the chance to get Plok on vinylonly 500 made, fuck
>>520835892The SNES' soundchip is objectively better from a purely hardware and range perspective but when it comes to actual implementation back during the 90s, the Genesis' FM sound generally sound more impressive than a lot of the stuff that was actually made for the SNES
youtube.com
>Use PSound to extract audio from PS2 disks>Get short audio clipsand sound samples usually, not full songsI feel that even long after the SNES, most games still used samples due to the low RAM footprint.
>Shit that sounds like generic Halloween music and fart bass played through a walkie talkie>"omg muh nostalgia"
>>520836464Depend of game, some old releases use samples well as ports.
>>520836687irredeemably shit taste and broken ears
>>520836410That song kind of creeps me out because it sounds nothing like the game it's on, and it sounds so melancholic, like the robocop theme on C64.Also recently discovered this one, probably the same composer for the Flintstones.youtube.com
>>520836410>>520836771Dean Evans did these, dude was an actual fucking wizardyoutube.com
Most underrated Plok! song:youtube.com
>>520836151>>520836281Sony did Snes sound chip so shit was really good stuff. And exactly why GBA ports sound like ass.
>>520836710I imagine that it would depend on if the game has enough spare time to let the disk laser read audio tracks rather than game data.
>>520836045I got filtered by grandpa plok
With the nonstop generic shit vidya "composers" do lately with most vidya, it feels like the art of kino vidya music that you actually remember/listen to more than once the moment the game is over is a slowly dying artform. We need more actual composers who can actually make music that isn't just shit you'd hear playing in every generic movie ever. Also, the world needs more music from guys like Davis Wise who just knew how to make music both atmospheric and kino to listen to/remember way after the game ends.
>>520836805keygen music
>>520837130Yuzo Koshiro is still working, at least.
>>520836687this *turns on rap*
>>520836859this shit is bonkers
>>520834674>not recognizing based Yuzo Koshiro
>>520837130I really hope the rumors about the Switch apparently having a new DKC in development are true solely because I love David Wise's shitYou'd think that he'd lose his touch after two decades but his work on Tropical Freeze was just as great as his work on DKC and DKC2
>>520836281Correct. The SNES sound chip was so underutilized it hurts. The amount of games with mediocre echoy samples and mediocre composition is baffling.
>>520837130I wouldn't be surprised if the degradation in music quality these days is partly due to how the Xbox 360 let people replace in-game music with whatever they wanted to play at that time.
>>520837376there are no legit rumors about a new DKC on Switch right now but i know he did an interview recently and he said he'd love to do more so that's really good to know.
youtube.com
>>520837476>>520837130music used to be "good" because it was commercialized heavily and every measure was comprised of 5-10 seconds of catchy, marketable tunes that you wouldn't forget.Music now is free from the designs that entrapped it and you no longer see a NYtimes article complaining about a dying art form because musicians can make what they feel like and not feel bottled up by the popular media.
Lol
music is shittier now because any dickhead with an iphone or laptop can "make" music that is 1. "acceptable" and 2. requires little talent
>>520837831you just aren't listening enough, there is genuinely good music out there.
>>520837912sure there is, i was talking more chart music to be honest.
>>520837961Oooh, mainstream music is good sometimes.I still listen to Fiona Apple and Adele sometimes.
>>520836410Ocean's shitty movie adaptations were usually only palatable due to the music. I remember Dennis the Menice having a pretty decent soundtrack to the point I sometimes borrowed it from a friend just to listen to it.
>>520834041This is entry-tier SNES flex, OP
>>520838042would you really call fiona apple mainstream though? she's fantastic and definitely has a large following, but i don't know if mainstream? at least not these days.
>>520838197Yeah it's pop, pop-jazz.
youtube.com
>>520838150Post your deep ones then if you're so great
>>520838297>yet mentions that he is making his own horror gamehuh
>>520837130Who's the guy that does the Shovel Knight soundtrack? That shit is awesome
youtube.com
>>520838476>"game"look up what "game" that is
For me, it's Alberto Gonzales.youtube.com
>>520838515Jake Kaufman. He's been at it for quite some time.
>>520838635based euroshovelwareyoutube.com
>>520838297To be honest I don't know what he can add to video game music these days. It worked back then due to the sheer ingenuity and limitations of the tools.
>>520834041>That part at 1:50Always gotta turn the sound up for that, it's so satisfying. Satisfying could describe the entire Plok OST frankly, Boss may be the best song but I've gotta give props to Akrillic youtube.com
>>520839004Last thing I heard of him regarding game music was the PSP version of Lemmings which I wasn't that impressed with (but I would rather have had remixes of the original music instead although there was one arranged track).
>>520834041good in context when the MC gets jumped by two niggas at night in the middle of nowhere from a family fued where his grandfather murdered one of them.
>>520836045Plok sucks ass though. Beat the first area and boss like it was nothing but second area was just "where the fuck do I go". Gave up out of boredom.
>>520835258>Chemical Plant Zone from Sonic 2genesis soundchip is pretty basic actually. all has that buzzy lowchip sound
I know there was a special chip on the cartridge but still. Either way, NES Sunsoft games were something else.youtube.com
>>520834041Tim Follin.Plok is the best SNES platformer of all time, however, the Pickfords won't give it the thumbs up for release on the SNES all on Switch, only because they don't know who the rights belong to.youtube.com
>>520839689Huh. I was wondering why Plok hasn't been re-released at all.
>>520839689Devs have right for it.
>>520839812No. They have the rights to the CHARACTER, which is why they made a webcomic off of him.zee-3.com
For me? It's Plok on the Genesis sound chip.youtube.com
>>520836151Allow the actual developer himself explain: youtube.com
>>520840049Gross. Surely it could be done better than that.
>>520835705Based youtube commenter
>>520839490>genesis soundchip is pretty basic actually. all has that buzzy lowchip soundThe Genesis has two different sound chips. One is a 16bit YM2612 FM synth with 6 channels and a DAC. Plus it also has an 8bit PSG with 3 square waves and one noice generator. Both audio chips are usually powered by an 8bit Zilog Z80A CPU. The Z80 CPU and PSG are there for 8-bit Master System backwards compatibility. But are used as part of the Genesis audio set up. The SNES functions like a MIDI playback device. With 8 channels that can all play digital audio samples. The Genesis is limited to one DAC audio channel for digital samples. Both audio chips are very different from each other.
>>520839948Aren't they making a new Plok game?
The GB Robocop theme will always be baffling for having this laidback theme for a game about mayhem and violence and it's about 3:00 long for just a title screen.youtube.com
>>520840705If they own the character they can make a new game all they want, but they don't have the rights to release the old game. The guy who designed the characters in pic related runs a fan site for the series and has released some comics, but the game was made by Irem, which died early this decade or around there, so who knows who owns the game itself.
One of my Favsyoutu.be
>>520840705Plok 64 was in development, but then it got cancelled. And since the devs lost the rights to the first game (on top of the GBA's audio being absolute horseshit), unlike most other SNES era platformers, did not see a port to the GameBoy Advance.Plok did appear, with permission, as a boss in some the homebrew Atari Lynx game, Zaku.
>>520834992except the genesis never used soundfonts. its soundchip works like an actual synth generating sounds based on what the game was programmed to tell it, it doesnt use standardized sounds. soundfonts are sample banks, and they arent stored in the console, they are stored in the game itself.>>520835852>>520836151because its Amiga MOD music being played using some RAM trickery i think. this video explains it youtube.com

>>520841474IREM had to shut down developing video games, going to pachinko and slot-machines after the big earthquake Japan had a while back. The people who did video games in IREM made a new company and IREM acts as their publisher. R-Type Final 2 had to do a kickstarter to get funding secured for it.
Tim Follin's Amiga Ghouls 'n' Ghosts theme would've made a great attract mode theme for an arcade game.youtube.com
>>520835454Solstice has no right sounding that fucking good.
>>520841590I love happy music!youtube.com
>>520841456So why didn't Nintendo give the NES sound expansion capabilities? I know you can mod your NES, but still, why?
>>520842114Because NoA is cheap.
>>520834041Tim Follin is an actual God. He did this on the fucking ZX Spectumyoutube.com
>>520842114The dumbfuck who designed the NES figured those extra pins would never ever get used and moved them to the expansion port at the bottom of the console that never got used.Turns out they were used for extra soundchip capabilities in Japanese Famicom games.About as bad as Sega being cheap fucks and not adding the FM chip to the Sega Master System making all SMS games sound like garbage compared to the NES.
youtube.com
>>520834041
>>520834041Tim follin knew what instruments samples/sound fonts to use.Unlike Capcom and their fucking awful snes music especially their guitars (mega man is a prime example)
>>520842173Here's another one he did at 15 years old.youtube.com
You have TWO old one-off platformers that you can revive into its own series. Allowing them to expand its gameplay elements, characters, and setting. Which do you choose?>>520841193>>520841590Good taste
>>520834041Bump because Tim Follin was a genius.
>Thread about great retro music>No ZAMNYou have beaten the game, right?youtu.be
How can people say the Genesis had terrible soundyoutube.com
>>520835454I love how the first few seconds it tricks you into thinking its some generic medieval track. Also there's not enough buff mages in gaming. That cover should be spray painted on the side of a van.
>Tim Follin returns to game development>For a shitty FMV iOS game
>>520842521He even made Tom & Jerry good by remixing the classic shorts' background musics for the NES game.I remember renting the SNES game a few years later and being mad it was shitty generic crap instead of more of the NES goodness.youtube.com

>>520842851Gotta start somewhere. Or restart rather.
>>520842894MMX's introductory highway theme is still one of the best game stage themes of all time.
>>520842949Hardly a restart if he released it and then went back to doing nothing.
>>520843039X3 despite its faults had a much better banger of an intro in my somewhat humble opinion.
>>520837130Play literally anything but AAA western games.
>>520842617Because they don't know shit.youtube.com
>>520834041>Plok soundtrack is so good that you get a cassette copy of itWhy can't all OSTs be this good
>>520842617Only a few developers actually cared enough to get around the Genesis music/fx sounding naturally fuzzy. Most others just didn't care enough to put in the extra effort like Capcom.
>>520843442A lot of games did get cassette or CDs in japan. But CDs were arranged so you could listen to bitching stuff like this.youtube.com

The Sega CD attachment for the Sega Genesis/ Mega Drive was interesting to me because it added an 8-channel PCM to the system, which allowed the system to have some SNES like sample capabilities. All 8 PCM channels could stream digital audio. Not ,many games used it though.. All the "past" levels in Sonic CD did: youtube.com

All sound fonts have to be stored on the cartridge. The PS1 basically has a bigger and better version of the SNES audio chip thanks to Ken Kutaragi. >>520850858Colony was always a great tune as well.Original: youtube.com
>>520851306Because it uses SMW soundfont. But speaking of 16bit port.youtube.com
Not music, but Jurassic Park II: The Chaos Continues made really good use of the SNES's audio chip with voice acting in it's cartoon intro: youtube.com
>>520850858>Gokinjo Boukentai will never get a translation patch
>>520849420Supposedly Plok has an unusually tiny code size for an SNES game - smaller than SMAS: SMB1. While code doesn't take up a ton of space, maybe that left room for higher quality samples.

>>520851060>If I remember the whole thing was done note by note. A bit iffy on some parts but when you do without proper documentation shit is really impressive.Even with the iffy parts, Rock N' Roll Racing on the SNES still has some really amazing renditions of many classic rock songs. The audio in the Genesis/ mega Drive game was a hot mess in comparison: youtube.com
You think that's impressive? They shoved THIS into a goddamn gameboy game.youtube.com
