Given the utter failure of Son of the Mask, and the success of the first film, do you think audiences would be able to accept a new Mask film more accurate to the comic's horror roots?
In the comic, the mask acts like a drug. It appears to be given the host what they want, but it just uses their desires to fuel it's own rampages. Invariably every host's life gets destroyed and they frequently get killed, often by the dozens of crime organizations and cults desperately trying to acquire it.
The comic more explored what an utter nightmare someone with cartoon physiology would be in the real world. Someone who can jump off a building and land flat on the ground and then stand up unharmed, and as such enact horrible acts of violence on people as if they too had cartoon physiology with graphically gory effect.
Also, he had a really interesting nemesis in Walter. Walter starts out as a crimelord's thug, he doesn't speak, and he cannot wear the mask, but he's so grounded in reality and unstoppable that he's actually able to injure whoever wears the Mask.
Well, Deadpool was a success. There's going to be a slew of films trying to replicate it's formula. The copycat films will mostly suck, but will help ease the mainstream into the idea of a hilariously sociopathic superhero.
Give it around a decade, I'd wager a studio would green-light a new Mask film in this style.
In my mind it would be best suited as a fully CG film, based on the style of the pictures you posted.
The only issue is the mainstream may call out the new Mask film for being too much like Deadpool.

It's really more of a Joker takeoff than deadpool.
Do it as a horror film and it would become reddit fap material for the durden/ledger/bateman worshippers.
Anthony Perry
does The Mask rape anyone in the comics?
Leo Price
Not on panel, but he does sexually assault every comic vixen he runs into, though it's always played for laughs.
The Mask is rarely worn by a flat out evil person, it generally finds it's way into the hands of weak people who have been picked on or victimized in some way. Their actions start out as harmless pranks, but gradually escalate to mass murder. Depending on the personality of the hose they may have a moment of conscience and get rid of the mask as soon as someone dies at their hands, in other cases they can't give it up and end up getting themselves killed. One arc is all about a guy using the mask as a serial killer to hunt down, torture and humiliate everyone who picked on him in high school. When Lobo put it on he destroyed planets.

People love masks, I think they are ready. They would probably fill it with propaganda though
Jace Collins
Why was she so perfect, Holla Forums?
Lincoln Young
Because they padded her bra for the movie. She wasn't yet famous enough to refuse, and this was shortly after she made that softcore porn video.
Jason Howard
what did he mean by this?
Charles Wood
Will we ever get a comic accurate Men in Black, where Jay is a white guy with a mullet, Kay is a psychopath with no qualms about killing anyone who gets in the way, and half of time they aren't even dealing with aliens?
Benjamin Foster
Bigger BETTER…
Michael Evans
But what audience would it appeal to? I can only picture it as a horror flick with the mask being a Freddy Krueger sort of character.
And even then plebs will probably relate it to the Jim Carrey version and be immediately repulsed and disgusted by the unnerving gruesome psychotic violence when grandpa confuses the two flicks and brings the new version home for the kiddies to watch. Nostalgiafags will whine and edgelords would make it a cult classic.

is the mask a metaphor for alcohol?
it makes you more confident and less inhibited, but will eventually ruin your life if you don't give it up

In practice a Mask movie like the comic books would be like Judge Doom from Who Framed Roger Rabbit. He was pretty effectively terrifying in that film.
The first Mask story has the same basis, but Stanley Ipkiss dies shortly after his rampage starts. He's a wimpy, neurotic man who buys the mask for his girlfriend. After taking revenge on a few people, his regular personality starts to change and he gets into a fight with his girlfriend, she dumps him and kicks him out, but keeps the mask since it was a gift from him.
He breaks into her apartment to get it back, but runs into cops responding to another call on the way out. In his escape he murders 11 cops.
When he gets home he takes off the mask to get some sleep, and his girlfriend who's pieced together his identity shoots him in the back and kills him. She then gives the mask to Lt. Kallaway, the same cop in the movie, and for the next couple arcs the cop wears the Mask, but it has the same effect on him, leading to him nearly killing his partner. The only real nod to this is Kallaway swimming out for the mask at the end of the film.
He ends up realizing what the mask is doing to him and burying it in cement in his basement. Crime lords show up looking for it, and then it changes hands a ton of times with Kallaway occasionally showing up trying to track it down.

Comic mask nowadays would trigger everyone in safe spaces and would be seen as edgy and nothing short of nc17 or x would be approved without serious watering down, and thus you get jim carrey
Ryan Flores
delete this, its rape to take secret pictures of women

Has this ever happened to you? You spend minutes looking for your favorite movie clip in a 4:3 aspect ratio so you can avoid having it letterboxed by 8chans embed, and all you end up with a clip that was filmed with cell phone 2007?
was that Lobo wearing the mask? If so that is fucking awesome.

It looks stupid now but Judge Doom truly terrified me when I was a child. I couldn't sleep for nearly a week after seeing that.
Logan Davis
Yep, it's from Lobo & Mask. Short version is, they meet, they fight, neither can kill the other, they team up, Lobo realizes the mask itself is the source of power, talks the host into taking it off, puts it on, and wreaks havoc across the universe.

You think that is bad, The Nostalgia Fag did a video comparing this to the movie and thought that this was the most extreme comic he ever read. Actually I remember reading the animated comic of the Mask (it was available for Mac way back). Anyway it was about the same time the Mask came out in theaters. And my sister bought me the comic CD. I watched it and I was slightly disappointed that the Mask movie wasn't like this.
The comic was so fucking much better
Aiden Price
I masked myself today To see if I still could I focus on the beat The only thing that's real The maracas tears a hole The old familiar street Try to dance it all away But I remember everything
I wear this mask of thorns Upon my liar liar's chair Full of broken thoughts I cannot repair Beneath the spotless mind The feelings disappear You are someone else I am still right here
If I could start again A million masks to wear I would mask myself I would find a way

Thank you, user

Speaking of the movie the carrey's mask personality is a mix between the sociopathic nerd and the casanova/vigilantecop. The comics clearly state that the mask was created with witchcraft from devilworshippers in africa (obvious blackface is obvious).
It has its own mindset and pushes its user into doing what it wants, which usually entails psychotic murder. I actually think it should have ended right after the cop gets shot and has the mask taken away.
John Scott
So he fucked his girlfriend to death?
Robert Rogers
i never knew that. In the movies its a mask made by Loki. still pretty interesting though.
Aaron Clark
It's still implied to be Loki in the comics. They say they don't know it's origin, but it's of African tribal design, but covered in Norse runes which doesn't make any sense to them. This is stated right before it gets shipped off to Gotham for the Joker/Mask crossover.
I just figured Loki got up to some shenanigans on the dark continent, and some voodoo shaman trapped him in a mask.
Caleb Scott
That won't ever happen. The Men in Black comic book sounds pretty dull in all honesty.
With The Mask, that's a pretty decent idea for a story about someone having their id run wild which most people could probably empathize with to an extent.
It wouldn't be much anything like the original movie which could still stand on its own, but instead be a more violent thrill ride.
You'd probably have to try something vaguely similar to the original movie in that it would need to be a self contained story about Ipkiss, while still taking a darker route of just outright killing people in fantastical ways.
Cooper Gomez

If Deadpool can be a success, so can this. I'd love to see new Mask movie that's more faithful to the comic.

OP here,
Dear god no. I had no idea he'd made a video on the subject, and I haven't watched it. I've never found him remotely funny or insightful. I despise most of the people who have been on CA over the years. I liked Spoony early on.
Even knowing that video relates to the subject I'm interested in discussing I've opted not to watch it because I find his videos aggrivatingly unfunny, and not just because I've disagreed with every clip I've seen of his, I mean as embarrassing as Linkara is, I've never felt tangibly annoyed from the clips I've seen of him. Something about what Doug thinks passes for humor and his smug jittery mannerisms bothers me. I hate these these people think things like "a tie loose around an undershirt and a baseball cap" or "a fedora an a prop gun" are costumes.
Samuel Cox
got a magnet link instead? cant stand having a comic read to me with half the words cropped out and at a slow pace

congratulations on derailing the thread you so enjoyed for not being derailed, numbnuts.

Xavier Mitchell
i never cared if the thread was derailed or not in the first place.

Having a great time reading this thread :D thanks for the tears you itty bitty manbabys.
It says lots about you if you think that there's such a big difference between Rey and Luke, you clearly have a terrible memory Luke only had 2 lessons before he beat Vader you stupid children, yet I don't see anyone calling him a "marky-sue". (Or does it only take a single lesson for a man to become a skilled warrior?)
Luke is able to become a masterful pilot because he drove in his t16 and shot wumprats? So if i spent time shooting cats from a hovercraft does that make me able to fly a fighterjet? Get real you bitter virgin's, Luke is just as unreal as Rey, if not more so.
There is only 1 reason you don't like Rey and it's because she's a strong, independent, woman who is capable of taking on a manbaby in 1on1 combat. (she doesn't just take him on btw, she kicks his ass)
I don't expect you to admit it to me but I hope you can admit it to yourself the only reason you have for hating this film is your own venomous misogyny, perpetual virginity and hatred of powerful women.

This has nothing to do with what a massive, ugly drunk bitch suika ibuki is.

Looking stupid is part of what makes him scary. He's a monster who can't be stopped and doesn't play by the rules of reality.
Brody Howard
This thread got me wondering, if this movie got made, which direction should they go with the story? Have the mask pass from person to person like in the comics or should it focus on just one character, like Ipkiss or the detective? Because constantly jumping from protagonist to protagonist will make it harder to relate to any, and in turn their plights with the mask.
Juan Campbell
hitler did nothing wrong

Good thing I can hate women, have a good relationship with my mother, get laid on a regular basis with my girlfriends and vote in powerful men into positions of power. Go back to bed little girl.

Maybe, but everything gets made into PG-13 these days, Deadpool was the exception.
