Write out what happens in what scene and play off of that. I use the story mode to set up certain scenes and I then use the "do" command to actively play it out. When I use the "do" mode, I kind of just write in the second person (You do this, you do that), and when I want to say something I just use quotation marks. Then, if I feel like I've reached the end of a particular scene, I use story mode to advance the plot a bit which then opens up me up to new scenarios. Here's a pic example of me using both "do", and "story". The lower chunk of text at the party was a scenario I came up with on my own using the story mode, and it opened me up to a new cool scene, and the rest was me and the AI working together to get a surprisingly realistic friendly convo scene. In AI dungeon, you're not just a passive consumer to the story like in most vidya, but an active participant and sometimes you will have to do the heavy load. Which is really fine, because at the end of the day you should dictate where you might want the story to go.

You can't just build it on the fly, take some time and write out certain scenarios which you will then play out. Playing on the fly will take you from a detective story to a fantasy sex dungeon to a zombie apocalypse. Make sure to use the story mode every now and again to keep the story focused.
