Usually animated films. Not a big fan of Ghibli's because most of their stuff is emotional schlock, but a few of their directors and animators have legit skills and I have followed their careers such as Kitaro Kosaka. I enjoy the mid 80s to mid 90s OVA era because there was a certain economic miracle that made it viable to have actual budgets and properly animate things even if the stories tended to be pedestrian. I enjoy Osamu Tezuka's stories because even if they seem incredibly dated today, they carry a distinct flavor of storytelling that is both unique and foundational for contemporary animation. Of course Satoshi Kon is a brilliant storyteller, but he is so hyped I almost feel the need to be contrarian and dislike him. Shinbo used to be an amazing director and animator, but ever since Madoka he has been caught in rut that has come to typify the "Shaft Style" of his own devising. I think Mekakucity Actors is the most egregious example of this. His best work of course is SOUL TAKER which despite having an incredibly convoluted plot was brilliantly animated and directed with its single most defining quality being the rich and involving sound design. However there is one production that actually suppasses it on that front. Ironically enough Boku no Pico, for being a disgusting fetish series, has quite possibly the single greatest example of sound design that has ever been found in anime. Sadly the work is marred by the fact you have to listen to the sounds of little boys having sex interupting what ever audible enjoyment you may have had. It's kind of tragic that some small aspect of that shitshow was so incredibly well done. Of course Masahiro Ando is probably the best working animator and director going right now. He has slowed his production down considerably since the completion of Sutorenjia Mukohadan, but the vibrant feel of his animation coupled with his excellent choice in material has managed to elevate several productions that would have been mediocre at best and terrible at worst into enjoyable and frankly beautiful works of gentle tranquility and introspection interrupted by flurries of violence and exposition.

I don't know I guess I kind of have average tastes now that I think about it. But at least I am not into /a/'s moeshit obsession.
