I just finished FF8 for the first time. It sucks. It is bad even by Final Fantasy standards. Almost every single aspect of this game is subpar to terrible. The only reason I even pushed myself to finish it was so I could say I beat it and have an informed opinion on it.Not shitposting or trolling. The music feels like a tonal mismatch for most scenes.I could go on but frankly, I disliked almost everything about this game. The only time I remember where I was genuinely enjoying myself was figuring out the art gallery puzzle in Ultimecia's Castle. FF8 feels like Square was just flexing their CG cutscene budget, and on the game side they focused all their efforts on subverting genre conventions and trying to do everything differently, regardless of whether their ideas were good or not.

There's other stuff that is just never explained anywhere like why Ellone (and only Ellone) has special powers. It's not crucial for understanding the story but it'd at least help make it more credible.Ultimecia wanting to achieve time compression is made obvious, but that is her objective, not her motivation. Why does she want to compress time? For power/control? Why does she want that? Not just in a broader sense of "because those things are desirable", why does this specific character Ultimecia want power. This might sound like I'm being pedantic, but well written characters have reasons for their actions, ideally believable/relatable reasons that contrast with other opposing characters and thereby explore some kind of greater theme. Admittedly, this isn't really Final Fantasy's forte.

FF7 was more memorable, with higher highs, but somehow FF8 is the one I always return to. It's a goddamn labour of love put in AAA product that could only be achieved during that time. Everyone cared and put the best they could.
