I don't know. His characters were all so flat and one-dimensional. Just at how the characters in Castle of Cagliastro act compared to the way they act in almost every other piece of Lupin III media. They're extremely watered down. Even Pinocchio had more personality than any character in a Miyazaki film.

That's not very impressive considering the majority of his movies have the pretty much the same story, just in different settings.

Maybe that's why his movies were all vastly inferior to classic Disney movies.

Rotoscoping (which they used a lot) isn't real animation, and just about the only reason Disney's movies are praised is because the animation has a lot of frames that go together smoothly. Nobody cares about the movements themselves, the character design, the camera work, the cinematography, the background art, the design, the music (other than the songs), the sound design…

Kiki's Delivery Service and Howl's Moving Castle are adaptations. He also wrote or co-wrote some adaptations. Cagliostro I think has an original story but is otherwise someone else's material.

If we were talking about live action or treated animation the way we treat live action, nobody would ever say this. But animation is seen as children's entertainment, the standards for which are dictated by Disney. So because Disney is better at making Disney movies than Ghibli, Disney is supposed to be better at making movies, period.

OP here. I'm 21 and mostly grew up with the Pixar films over the 2D Disney films. The one exception was Pinocchio which I owned on VHS and watched quite a bit (still love it). The only other 2D Disney films I watched as a kid were Mulan and Lilo and Stitch. Think I watched Lion King and Tarzan in their entirety once but that was back when I was still in single digits.

After watching Snow White, I'll be checking out the rest of the classic Disney line-up ASAP.
