You have a point but you're disregarding the effect that it has on the other side. In Hillary/Trump's case it makes no sense for Trump to kill someone who is going to spill the beans on Hillary's corruption. Election day will be close and any slight advantage is taken in a heartbeat. Eliminating Hillary and launching the democratic party into meltdown makes a lot more sense than killing Hillary's opposition in order to keep her on the ballot.
