I thought he disliked scifi because he thought it was cold and inhuman.

His films tended to focus on the human element of the characters. I'm told that Stalker and Solaris are both quite different from the books they were based off in this regard.

Good to see he recognized that Kurosawa was his superior in filmmaking.

Roadside Picnic is mostly about a guy dealing with his shitty life, so I don't know how true that is. The fantastical/sci-fi elements are there to ruin his life more thoroughly.

Actually, Roadside Picnic might focus more on it's characters than Stalker did.
Roadside Picnic is about the lives of the people who make a living in and around the Zone.
Stalker was three guys talking philosophy in a field.

No, roadside picnic was about that one conversation in the bar in which they compare humanity and their relation to the "alien" zone as akin to the relationship of insects and a roadside picnic, that is the entire point of the story.

probably, but it was a much more comfier movie. he also said it was a remake despite soderbergh stating it wasn't.

Stalker was more about "faith in the Zone" as an allegory to christian humility, than people's relation with the Zone. I guess the Strugatskys were okay with that change of theme, since they also contributed on the screenplay.

In his time, Japan was popular for cool stuff like Ninjas and Samurai, rather than animu and porn as it is now. He would have been extremely disappointed had he lived to see current Japan.

On another note, sucks that he died so early. To put things in perspective, Clint Eastwood is older than him. Imagine if Eastwood died in the 80s, movies such as Gran Torino would never have been made.
