Gendry in the show is a composite character of two people; Gendry and another bastard named Edric Storm. Edric is about 10, he's a bit of a refined noble, but a nice kid, and he becomes decent friends with his cousin Shireen. He was conceived on Stannis' marriage bed when Robert Baratheon fucked Delena Florent, Selyse (Stannis' wife's) cousin. This angers Stannis to this very day, but he doesn't hate the boy. When Stannis becomes desperate, he begins to consider sacrificing him despite seriously loathing the possibility, and Davos thinks he will eventually do it.

There would maybe be someone that has come to volume 20 but not further, only because its so grimdark and no, good end in sight.
Plus its a hard collection to get ones hand on.
When the same retards take up The Walking Dead as grimdark, the comics where pretty tame compared to berserk, most comics in the west is tame compared to Berserk or other niche seinen manga.
The reason I've come to this conclusion is because the fucked up ones are really fucked up, and a big fuck you to the readers.
If you have seen the good manga to film adaptation. I can think of one that is Old Boy, even that film I would guess is tame in the Western film adaptation of the South Korean film adaptation.
