Either way, it started way before the original Shrek is love, Shrek is life. People were looking for the next autistic fanbase and so someone drew that shadow comic where shrek says, "it's ogre," or whatever. Then this video came out. It wasn't one source, it was a combination of people memeing and trying to make shrek into the next big autism fanbase. Instead it backfired in the best way possible and turned into a source of ironic memes.

Shrekchan was started as a response to some guy on YouTube raging over someone else saying "Shrek is drek." Its userbase made it into a parody of Ponychan, with brogres in place of bronies. They were supposed to mock all the worst aspects of the MLP fandom, but it quickly devolved into only mocking the clopfics, until eventually the one we all know was created.

I witnessed all this first-hand.

Shrek had a bad case of sequelitis. Sequels are fine. But the tendancy a bunch of times is to pile more, more, more onto the fucking thing. If you sit there and try and watch the shrek sequels it's obvious. They pile so many more chrarcters so much layered onto it, all in the hopes of keeping it intresting. And of course, it feels shitty and broken. The entire appeal of the thing lost in the layers of shit that's been layered on cause its a sequel.

I do love what the internets done with shrek though. That makes me truly happy.
