He had once choice, either power or his family. Unfortunately, he chose wrong, and everything he worked for was lost before his very eyes.
You got to hand it to George, he knows how to make you feel for a guy who killed his daughter.
But he didn't do it for power. His character was the embodiment of "I need to win the throne because it's mine by blood and it is my duty and job in life to sit the throne". I admit he was ruthless in how he went about it. His brother may have been a power-grabbing faggot himself with no claim, but Stannis still had his own brother murdered over the throne
Stannis was a hack, never knew what people saw in this guy.
