In the 80's and 90's it was a huge franchise. They were jews, but they were of the Mel Brooks variety. Everyone involved in the original movies was hilarious. The cartoon was extremely popular and considered of pretty high quality for the time, and the Extreme follow-up (which admittedly I've only seen a few episodes of) was apparently surprisingly well-written as well. Also I've heard good things about the IDW comics.

The Ghostbusters game that used the plot they intended to use for Ghostbusters was extremely well-received, and actually what lead to Sony deciding to go forward with this movie. Unfortunately they put it in Pascal's hands, and she hated the property.
