The story is that after/around the third season Takei sort of hinted to Roddenberry that he might want to sort of think about gays on Star Trek and Roddenberry basically said no, reason being that they'd just done the episode where Kirk kissed Uhura and taken a beating in the ratings because several local affiliates wouldn't even show it, and if they put in homosexuals censorship and all sorts of other stuff could come down on them even harder. Then the show got cancelled so it became moot.

How generic can Star Trek get? It's just called "Beyond" now. Beyond what? I couldn't think of a more superficially "deep" title if I tried. Will this movie really succeed? Will it do worse than it's predecessors?

It reminds me of Transformers. Every movie is the same plot-a mysterious "evil" appears, then basically all events are forgiven and forgotten by the next movie. It's disgusting, and not because of any sentimental value, but just the laziness of it all. Why won't anyone make anything good anymore?
