If you mean in terms of acclaim, The Thing. We absolutely adore this film here at Holla Forums, much like the Holla Forumstards adore Deus Ex.

If you mean in terms of similarities regarding the plot and what have you, I'd say the original Robocop or Total Recall, though is probably a closer equivalent.

reminds me when i rewatched it during a cold winter and realized how much attention to detail John Carpenter put into this movie. for some reason critics seemed to have hated it back when it came out.

coincidentally, they removed the twin towers from the skyline due to it making the background image too big or something. then it became a part of the lore that the towers were destroyed by terrorists. this was of course before 2001. the aquinas protocol was also prophetic, mass surveillance and all that. of course theres more, the game is chock full of odd stuff.

Because it came out the same week that E.T. did. Something to the effect of 'but (((Spielberg))) told us aliens were delightful harmless little creatures and now Carpenter's telling us they're horrific unrelenting monsters!'

That shit would not fly at all nowadays. Luckily, time has fixed the mistakes of the past for the most part and now E.T. is looked upon as an almost-cheesy family movie that you can't really watch on your own after the age of 12, whereas The Thing has been regarded as a masterpiece from start to finish with some of the best applications of practical effects in any era. Plus the theme was by Ennio Morricone.

Also the twin towers removal was because the texture would have taken up too much memory in the engine back in 2000. Did pretty well for an engine the developer (Tim Sweeny I think) literally made in his garage.

It really isn't, 90% of the threads (not this one) have no actual discussion going on and Holla Forums's memes become stale really quickly because of how overused they are I'm still okay with baneposting though. I'm not saying Holla Forums is great but I'd say about half the threads actually discuss games which is quite an improvement.
