Season 10 has a lot of not-so-great episodes, but there's great stuff in there too

Had they cancelled this series around season 10, people would remember it as one of the great all time classics.

Instead, they've dragged its reanimated corpse out and kept it dancing on stage to sell merchandise long after the vitality had left its body.

The joke's on them: people aren't buying the merch because of the new episodes, they're wasting their money making them.

Same here. Saw it as a kid, found it quite disturbing, probably because there is almost no joke. They also used clever animation tricks to make the tone fit as much as they could. Easily the best treehouse segment ever.
Those episodes are the ones with the sharpest decline in quality. They were already shit long before season 10.

I've been rewatching The Simpsons lately and I've come to realize that many of the problems affecting it started in the early seasons, the ones often celebrated for being the golden age. I'll go with an easy example and probably one of the most often cited problems afflicting the newer seasons: Lisa's inability to be wrong and being the stronk independent leftist who don't need no man.

As it turns out Lisa did start off more or less an average girl who possessed above-average intelligence just like Bart started off as a prankster who squandered his potential. On a sidenote I think the last time Bart was written according to that model was Itchy & Scratchy: The Movie in Season 4 where it ends on a flash-forward and Homer's punishment paid off and Bart grows up to be a Supreme Court Justice. Yes, The Simpsons played around with their history all the time but as I'm nearing the end of my binge-marathon this episode and how it stands up to the rest of the series really does seem like the last time Bart is the yang to Lisa's Yin so-to-speak. But I digress, Lisa started off okay but the point where things changed was actually quite early and I think most people tolerated it because these ideas in culture were quite new and The Simpsons always rebelled against their airing channel Fox and held them to a stereotypical standard. So where did everything change?

I lost track of the specific episode where I first noticed it but you can pinpoint its ugly head in Lisa vs. Malibu Stacy in Season 5. I dare you to watch that episode and not cringe at how naively simple it is as well as how quaint it is in comparison to typical feminist talk of today. What's very surprising about this episode is that it was satirizing a pretty stupid gimmick that Barbie dolls did in the mid 90s but it took that easy target and ran off into the feminist brink of self-righteous delusion. So after this episode Lisa loses roughly all of her child-like attitudes and becomes what you would expect in today's Simpsons. But it doesn't end there. There's one brief glimpse of hope before it jumps off the deep end.

In Lisa the Vegetarian, Lisa officially becomes a vegetarian and ruins Homer's barbecue in a surprisingly overthetop manner. Afterwards she finds out that Apu is a vegetarian and that Paul McCartney hangs out in his garden and she learns that despite how right she is she should not become over-bearing in her condemnation of those low IQ meat-eaters that she hates. After all, Apu tells her that he thinks she's a monster for not being a vegan. The irony in this episode is incredibly astounding, again because of how far the show has fallen and how Lisa is in today's seasons. After this episode a Lisa episode becomes what you would expect. There were some lingering lines of dialogue like in (I forgot which episode) where Lisa yells to her mom, "Mom, I found something more fun than complaining!" which I wish I could reference right now but the point is that The SImpsons or at least Lisa was always doomed to become what it is now. As the left continued to push in the direction it went, so did its caricatures of what each character relatively represented until you have what you see today. It's no wonder the Independent Thought Alarm gag came from the Vegetarian episode.

I meant to point out that despite Apu's advice Lisa acts in spite of that in today's episodes, hence how that episode ended with some hope that they would at least exercise some restraint. Obviously that's not the case with current year episodes.

Am I the only one who loved the episode with Mel Gibson, it was one of the few celebrity cameos that was very well handled outside of MJ's cameo in the earlier seasons.

For starters they got the most mileage out of Mel, with him and Homer running rampant in Hollywood culminating in the hilarious chase, the new ending for Mel's movie is among my top 10 Simpson moments too.

She meets a smart mexican girl who she's friends with until she finds out the mexican is a republican and running against her for student something and loses her shit. Marge tells her she used to be a republican and that it's okay to have different opinions on things. She was portrayed as wrong the entire episode

I remember that the only plot point Groening said was 100% canon was Bart becoming a Supreme Court Justice, but it seems the latest future episode threw that in the trash along with everything else.

When Lisa's character started to become more of a soap box for the writers that's when it really felt like the show was deteriorating. Overall the last good episode for me was the one where Marge and Homer end up streaking through town after losing their clothes at the mini golf park.

The show has no continuity now with each future episode being worse than the last.

The Simpsons is most definitely set in Portland, Oregon. Matt Groening grew up in Portland and lived at 742 Evergreen Terrace in the hills above it. There was even a nuclear power plant not far from Portland in Ranier, Oregon that completed construction when Matt was 20 so he had definitely heard of it during his middle and high school years. The characters are named after streets in Portland, Burns(ide), Flanders. It's definitely Portland. He spent his formative years there and you can see it in the show if you look closely. It seems to be in the midwest because it's easier that way but Groening spent all his life in California or Oregon from what I know.

Krusty seemed like a good jew parody. Simpsons used to be perfect in its comedy and would even target itself and its own characters.
