They are big for awhile thanks to media control and PR efforts, and then they are eventually phased out to make way for new forced celebrities just look at Meme Man in Guardians of the Galaxy, Jurassic World, The Cuckful Seven, etc.
Movie stars are no different than porn stars, you only know about them because their agents push them like there's no tomorrow. Eventually the public or the agents grow tired of them and want to bring in new meat, they then throw their old "stars" under the bus. They're products, and all products have an expiration date. The smart stars eventually become directors, like Clint Eastwood or Angelina Jolie (same shit happens in porn, Belladonna, etc)
