The original Emmanuelle is a weird movie. I checked it out to see what the hype was about since it has a reputation among softcore/erotica film circles and even its release is a landmark in movie history but for all the wrong reasons. But even after reading the wikipedia page and other articles it seems like its reputation is a joke taken seriously. The film itself is above average as far as most 70s "erotica" or what some prefer to call sexploitation films go and it does seem to have more going on since it is based on a sleazy novel, but the story behind its popularity reads like a bad joke.
The gist of it is, when it was brought to the US Columbia claimed the movie itself is aimed at women, and because of that it is classy and couldn't be pornographic. They tried to make it sound like it was a bold deep movie. If Holla Forums ever read who made those decisions they would be putting ((()))) all over the place and if they read the plot they would figure out (((their))) plan was when utilizing the film. In general, the reasoning behind that is absurd which is why it's so funny to see it carry on a high reputation. The ending of the movie is also pretty weird. Spoilers just in case someone plans on seeing it for themselves, for kino-cred of course:
Emmanuelle goes off the deep end in her quest of "eroticism" and "liberation from moral slavery," which basically is become a slut.
