The current crop of writers saw what Simpsons used to do with the tongue in cheek social commentary, but they didn't see it like that. They saw it as the show telling people how to think and what was right and wrong. They didn't catch the layers of pop culture reference, callbacks, and self-aware mockery.

The Itchy and Scratchy writers are all depicted as over educated, out of touch, and have no idea what made Itchy and Scratchy funny.

The only reason the show is still running is that millions of dollars of Simpsons merchandise is still being sold every year, and Fox think they need to keep pumping out new episodes to keep the merch money flowing (as if the new eps are the reason people are buying the merchandise).

They also came from an era where Harvard was hard to get into and the students that graduated from it were actually at the top of their respective fields.

Some of the best movies, and funniest comedies had Harvard alumni behind them.
