Censorship standards began to relax a bit by the late 50s but one thing was always clear, they couldn't depict any outright instances of sex or nudity - which is why American filmmakers had to be 'subtle'.

Filmmakers on the European continent weren't bound by such censorship guidelines and attitudes were generally more relaxed with regards to nudity. This is also not an opinion.
