I think it was originally started so that in the (what was then rare) occurrence of a divorce, a housewife (which would have been the default state for wives at the time) would not be hung out to dry if she needed to cut ties with her husband because he's abusing her or whatever.
In the modern era? Fuck if I know. It absolutely should not scale up with income because it creates a family-destroying incentive for divorce and honestly the chances are low that the ex-wife could have made that much money doing anything, or that she even made significantly more valuable sacrifices for the sake of the marriage than someone in a household that makes 50k a year. It also shouldn't go indefinitely, having to pay for an ex-wife for a decade is fucking bullshit no matter how rich you are.
