The most recent Secret Wars is quite obviously a Crisis rip-off but the original had next-to-nothing in common with it.

It was a mega-crossover to pre-empt DC's, which had been planned since 1980 for the 50th Anniversary.

It's like Crisis in that there's a big cosmic threat creating an excuse to have practically every character in the company be in a crossover and fight each other.

Secret Wars gets used a lot as a storyline in the MAU. I remember it being pretty big during the 90s Spiderman and it also showed up during the latest Ultimate Spiderman series too and a variation of it was used during Hulk and Agents of Smash.
I'd say it's a staple storyline that you can generally expect to show up in any new Marvel animated series. I just wish something like World War Hulk, House of M or Marvel Zombies would get animated. It'd be fun to see something a bit unexpected for an animated series.

better action, yeah, but everything else is questionable. half the movie attempts to be nolan-esque but the only semblance of that is david goyer and hans zimmer.

watchmen was alright, it had a great source to work with and they pretty much lifted the pages onto the screen, so that's more on alan's part. they also used hayter's script which imo the dr manhattan bombing worked better than the alien.

sucker punch had nice effects and cute girls, but realistically it was a pile of shit.

300 and dawn of the dead were fine because once again, action and good source material.
