Not saying you're wrong but a lot more changed between the 1940-50s and the 1970s than has changed between the 1980s-90s and 2000s-10s. Eddie Murphy, if he did a comeback, would find it a lot easier to be relevant, especially since the epitome of humour these days seems to a a fat bearded Jew making repeated jokes about smoking cannabis.

I think it was more that he went off about vaccinations causing autism, and unlike his then-girlfriend Jenny McCarthy, didn't have the hot body it takes for Hollywood to just accept him anyway.
