While I don't like to jack off to Mutualism, should Proudhon be held in higher regards as perhaps one of the original leftists instead of Marx?
Proudhon released his book "What is Property?" in 1840, a full 7 years before Das Kapital was written and with its release established the foundation for anarchism as a philosophy as well as showcasing the distriction between Personal and Private Property which most leftists agree to today. I'm not trying to be disrespectful to Marx as he was an amazing philosopher who helped push us farther left past Anarcho-Market Socialism. It just tends to bother me that Marx is so often considered to be the person who birthed the left when Proudhon should gain more recognition.
Yes. Proudhon was the first person to call for a scientific socialism (in contrast to the utopians of his day). He should truly be honoured as the founder of modern leftism.
Gavin Brooks
Proudhon should be getting more attention, tho. "What is Property?" is a good read.

Maybe Proudhon would've gained more recognition if his magnum opus wasn't verbose, barely intelligible gibberish. I'm not even shitposting, I've read about 3/4s of What is Property and I understood about 1/4 of it. I can barely keep track of his line of thought and half of his arguments seem like non-sequitors. Maybe it's just because Benjamin Tucker is a horrible translator or I'm a brainlet, but I understood significantly more from Marx's pamphlets than from WiP.

Only Marxists think Marx was some kind of prophet and nobody else matters. But who cares about Marxists?
Joshua Baker
No leftism dates to 1820s or so, and neither Marx nor the anarchists birthed it. If you mean ‘’leftist theory’’ then Proudhon is arguably one of the first.
Isaiah Gonzalez
leftist theory was meant to be italicized btw
Jackson Peterson
Marx himself said his opus magnus wouldn't have been possible without Proudhon's work.

To be honest, My mother tongue is french and I've read it in french, and its kinda ok. The translator must have been shitty
Angel Rivera
Benjamin Tucker translated the most well-known version.
Proudhon has a habit of going on weird tangents. But I think What is Property is probably one of his most straight forward books… System of Economic Contradictions is a lot more confusing and just kind of bad writing.

What Das Capital Lacks in Accessibility it makes up for in depth, What What is property lacks in depth it makes up for in accessibility. They are both important works. The abolition of private property is one of the cornerstones of all leftist beliefs if not the cornerstone
