Even on Wikipedia page you'll find the critique of the numbers, and if you search further, you can find evidence of miscalculations and the obsessive mania of authors, who purposely overstated the numbers. Of course, you shouldn't deny that nobody was killed under these regimes, such claims would be welcomed as warmly as the Holocaust deniers. Just say that the number of people killed under communist regimes is probably way lower, and don't forget to add that about 20 million people die each year due to capitalism

The book's thesis, that communism killed 100 million people in the 20th century, completely falls apart when you consider the methodology they used to arrive at that figure. Essentially, they count virtually every single death, whether by natural causes, or famines (that in countries like China or Russia were common prior to the communists taking power, and eventually ended under the communists), or even a notion of people who "should've been born."

So here's how it works: If a person died of a heart attack, or slipped and fell down a flight of stairs, or died of a disease, or died from smoking, or from famine, or even of old age, etc under a communist regime, he was a "victim of communism" because it's the fault of the communists that he didn't have the right health care, or whatever. Basically, any death that happened, if it happened under a communist state (a state that called itself communist is the criteria the authors use), it was a result of "communism."

Now the funny thing is that if you use this methodology to calculate deaths under any other system, like capitalism, using the same criteria (a government that ''calls;' itself capitalist), you get a much, much higher death toll for capitalism. At least 100 million people died of smoking in capitalist countries in the 20th century. And how many people have died in capitalist countries of problems that could've been solved from inadequate health care? And how many people have died from obesity, etc? And that's not even getting into all of the overtly political deaths caused by funding death squads in other countries, starting wars of aggression, etc that capitalist countries (again, ones that have simply professed to be adherents to capitalism) have done.

So in conclusion, it's a load of crap. "Communism" didn't kill 100 million people, and if it did (if we accept this flawed methodology), then capitalism has killed at least ten times as many, and with the way the environment is heading, if we don't stop capitalism, it will surely end the human species.

Chile, the National Front in Iran was partly communist (Leninist and Titoist elements), the PCI and PCF won plently of legislative elections (and in some cases would have won outright if not for US electoral manipulation), both Nicaragua and Venezuela have had leftist (although debatable if they are communist in ideological terms) governments elected. There is the state of Kerala which has an ideologically marxist government, several countries in Europe have had governments with communist parties in them (Portugal springs to mind), And then finally there is the clusterfuck of Nepal. What has worked best for me as autistic as it sounds is going through statistics of how many people starve because of capitalism which is around 21 000 die every day because of starvation alone.
