Not even close to true, the elderly were taken in by their children and were part of the household. They weren't complete layabouts but they weren't expected to do the labor of teenagers either, they had earned some rest.
This wasn't the case for everyone of course but the vulgarity of capitalism has erased even this minor social contract. Now the elderly are just released into the woods right when their ability to work and learn is decaying.
