Turn off the computer, put on some music, and sit down in front of some paper with a pencil. Don't stop until you fill up the page. When it's full, turn it over and start over.

IMO you don't have to really start off trying to draw anything. Just make shapes on the page, not scribbles, but random lines. Try and see what kind of things those lines could make and build on them. It doesn't really matter if it's "good" or "right" or what it looks like, right now you're just training your brain to work with your arm.

Ideally you want to be using your arm. The natural tendency is to draw with the wrist, but that can fuck up line consistency. Try not to lean on the page or move in too close. Unless you're working on some specific detail, you want to be in a position where you can see the composition as a whole. Since you're just starting out this isn't super important, but it's good to try and establish good habits early, because the more ingrained they get the harder they are to overcome later when you start to develop your technique.

These are guidelines, not rules. There are solid rules to art, but they'll come later.

I'm posting some criticism by Alex Toth. He designed Space Ghost and he's basically a legend in the world of animation, famous for both his amazing technical skill and his tendency to feud with other artists.

aww thanks comrades, I'm sick today so this thread cheered me up a bit. it really does make me happy that you all liked my silly comic so much, especially because the default opinion across the internet was extremely negative. People just instantly disliked it because of the catgirl premise, and I don't like working on things that so many people were going to instantly dislike.

I started wanting to put more of my story ideas into the comic, like the Transhumanism one. but I realized there was no point to that, because less people would read my stories if they were automatically turned off so much by the premise. Not to mention, I was embarassed by this comic because of the negative reactions it received, so I absolutely did not want to show my friends and family. So what's the point of doing a comic like this, then? I wanted to be proud of what I was making, and show it off to everyone, and have everyone enjoy it.

I decided I may as well use my story ideas and political ideas in a different comic, one that could appeal to everyone and people wouldn't have a reason to automatically close the browser when they saw it.

I'm still thinking about whether I want my comics to be webcomics or not, though. I might want to try to get them published and distributed in stores instead. It seems like there are a lot of comic fans you just can't reach with webcomics… idk.

I don't think I will ever bring the comic back. :( and no, I won't be pursuaded with money, like I said, the reasons had more to do with the effort involved and not being completely proud of the end product. Also, getting doxxed and threatened by Holla Forums was also not the most fun thing.

I'm still around, friend! I visit the board almost every day and I still draw here, like in the Alunya thread, I just don't post with the tripcode as much now.

I'm working on a political science degree! :D it's really fun, I love school and I'm happy I made the decision to go.

Go get a sketchbook and try to draw characters you like, or animals you like. the best way to get better at drawing is to draw every day, and the best way to motivate yourself to do that is to like what you're drawing! so beware the trap of drills and drawing exercises, most of your drawing should be enjoyable to you.

yeah well, part of what makes big art projects fun for me, unfortunately, is seeing my friends and family and others enjoy what I've made. just a personality difference I guess. also I don't use reddit anymore, mainly just here and twitter. idk what the big deal is about which internet communities people visit, anyway. some of us choose to let some pretty irrelevant shit bother ourselves sometimes, especially compared to what else is happening out there in the world.

It's less about what sites you visit and more about what culture you have. You can visit reddit every day without adopting their culture, or you can never go to reddit but still have exactly the same normalfag views as the typical redditor. Categorizing people by communities is a (perhaps lazy) shortcut for describing the culture and values they hold.
