Not terribly surprised. The deal is shit, but I think the writing is on the wall for the oil industry. Major nations are looking to completely shift to electric cars within a few decades and, for example, China is looking to completely transition from fossil fuel based power to a safe nuclear option. I think a major permanent drop in oil revenue will only accelerate this process. We might maybe not die from retarded climate change afterall. Hopefully nuclear war will save the day.

Odds are that he got some concession or other beneath the table, as usual in politics. But this being Trump, it's entirely possible he backed out simply because someone came up to him and asked him to. Haven't you noticed how he always argues in favor of whatever has just been said to him? It's part of how he made his fortune, he schmoozed with everyone in order to try to establish a rapport, tries to butter them up first before threatening them. Maybe it's pathological, maybe he has conditioned himself by doing it all the time, but regardless, it seems to be his default behavior now. If you tried to argue with him that the sky is green while maintaining a serious semblance and confidence in that position, he would end up agreeing with you.
